I'm thrilled to have a second broody hen. My silkie hen, Mrs. Party, is due with a dozen bantam cochin and silkie eggs this coming Wednesday, but I promised the chicks to a friend. I'm in desperate need of more bantam cochins, and I've been saving cochin eggs for the last week, with my fingers crossed.

Yesterday, little Jane, my last blue bantam cochin hen wouldn't get off the nest. When I got up this morning, she was still in there, so I gave her 13 eggs and put her in my broody nest, and she's settled in beautifully. She's an experienced mama, and acted like she was thrilled to have a nest to sit on. Yippee!!!

Anyone hatching with me?

Well, change of plans. I bought bantam b/b/s cochin eggs from Little Ameraucana Mom, and set them under my cochin today. I wish she was big enough to set 2 dozen bantam eggs, but she's not, darn it. So I took our eggs out and placed the 11 eggs under her.

I candled the eggs she's been setting, and they're showing the beginnings of veining, and I can see a little wiggly embryo in most of them, so I'm going to see what I can set up really quickly to try to hatch these out myself.

I have to say that Little Ameraucana Mom is a great seller.

I bought 6+ eggs, and she shipped 11. They were beautifully packaged, and I'm thrilled to have so many. Her cochins are beautiful, and I have my fingers crossed for a great hatch of some beautiful cochins!

I have some in the incubator due on the 24th. I know now that you have changed your plans but I do that several times a day!! I have 36 Bantam eggs that I bought from PamperedPoultry. They are all nice. I know it is early but I candled some last night and saw veining in all!! I am very eggcited! I have a variety - Mottled Cochins, Lavendar Cochins, Seramas, Sizzles, Japanese and a couple of others. I will get a full list up later. I am candling all this weekend. I will let you know how the candling comes out. I am excited to have light shelled eggs so that I can see inside well.

Good luck with your hatch!! Will be waiting to see babies. I am wondering how I will keep track of who is who as they start to hatch. Too many to section off the incubator. Open to ideas............

Ooohhhhhhhhhh I love your variety! I have no idea how to keep track of everyone, but that is one of my favorite things about having a mixed bunch. I love watching and figuring out who and what everyone is as they grow!

It's lockdown time!!! I have had some temperature fluctuations so I am not locking down as many as I had hoped:( I have 22 now due on the 24th!!

Here is what I have: 1 - Blue Birchen OEGB, 1 - Japanese Black Tail White, 3 - Lavender Cochins, 2 - Sizzles, 8 Milled Cochins, 3 Barred OEGB and 2 - Mixed. I have one Serama egg that looks great and 1 that looks iffy.

Waiting for the zipping to begin in a couple of days!!

Now, how to get some sleep?

Jossanne -- How are yours looking??

Mine aren't doing so great. It's always a gamble with shipped eggs. I candled on day 11, and out of 11 eggs, 3 looked great, 6 were clear, 1 had a blood ring (I couldn't see movement, but left it in there to watch for a few days) and one looked like it was developing but had quit or was somehow behind the others. I left it in there too.

So I have probably three babies growing. I'll go out and check the two iffies, with my fingers crossed.

Three will be great, if they all hatch, and if I have at least one pullet.

Lockdown time! How exciting. I wish mine were due on the 24th. I can't wait to hear how your hatch goes! Keep me posted...

OK, just went out and candled in the rain and wind. The three are still looking great, with 7 days to go. The blood ring and the other maybe are definitely both not good. Darn it, but I'm not surprised. I was doubtful the other day. Keeping my fingers and toes and legs and eyes crossed for three healthy, beautiful chicks!

Have a good night!

i've got a mixture of d'uccles and mille fleur bantam cochins due the 30th ... I candled the other day and the d'uccles are doing well, but I don't think I have many thriving cochins ... I'll candle again tomorrow (since I have 18 eggs under my bantam conchin X) ... and the see -throughers are outta there ... to make sure the thriving have the best chance possible...

my broody - is maiden .... but she's VERY good with her nest - so i'm hopeful!

Happy Hatching !

...

GOOD LUCK !

Trying to be patient!! No noise in the bator but when I candled last night there was movement in all but one of my eggs. So excited! I need to clean or something to stay away from the incubator.

I would like to hatch some Mille Fleurs. I think they are so cute.

I haven't tried hatching with a broody yet as none of my ladies have had very much interest in sitting on eggs. I had one that sat for 5 days and quit.

I will post pictures as I get pips, zips and fluffy butts!!

Just sit and read the incubating chicks and raising baby chicks thread, and live vicariously through all the others with new chicks... and then SIT ON YOUR HANDS!

It is hard enough leaving a broody alone with hatching babies, I can't imagine how hard it must be when you can actually see them! But how fun anyway... I want an incubator badly, so I can have the sweet agony of watching and waiting and sitting on my hands!

Have fun! Good luck!
