yayy! first pip!

Yes i did help because i thought he could die being in the membrane which was getting less 'n' less moist. Thanks for telling me (s)he's okay. He's not fluffing out yet but i could expect that if i was in a ball filled with water for 21 days!

You're welcome I know my first hatch I stayed up most of the night and think I ended up with a few grey hairs

Wish I had found this site well before I started hatching....

The thing to be careful when helping them out is to stop chipping straight away if the membrane bleeds as this means they are not quite ready, the veins gradually recede and dry up through the hatching process. The main thing to make sure is that they have an air hole to breathe through and the you can slowly chip away at shell and membrane, if it bleeds put back in for and hour or so and then have another look. If you're worried about the membrane drying out soak a paper towel and wrap that around the egg. It can take upto 24-48 hrs from the first pip.

They also dont get up for a few hours and will lurch around first anyway rather than walking, just make sure the little one is nice and warm so his/her fluff can dry off

Keep us updated

I'm keeping him toasty... keep checking on him... now he's more active and is kicking his legs and now i can see his cute little eye which was usually closed. He's so adorable... when he fluffs im going to need to know his breed... He's a cross between a Rhode Island Red and some British thing... or between some white thing and some British thing. I just can't believe he hatched (this is my first time)... im going to try again but this time in my HovaBator!!!!

How many other eggs have you got to hatch?

Am so jealous, I loved doing all my hatching over the summer and now its over am missing seeing the babies come out. But have recently bought a roo for my cochin bantam girls so will have loads to hatch next year

i have 18 but i think the majority died of a temp spike i got last week (temp hit 120F)... we have staggered hatch dates with this being one of the last, so maybe the ones that came in this batch will hatch

Here's a pic of Egg (the name of the first chick if you didn't see my starting post). He is beginning to walk but he is not upright yet, he is tilted forward.
