Yellow Crusty / Mushy Skin UPDATED with pictures last post.

What is the antifungal spray you are using. It is going to be tomorrow before I can get out there.

That's the link to the product I am using on them. I make sure I work it all the way to the skin and am already seeing an improvement, by no means are we clearing it up already but I'm seeing shrinking of the crud already.

So I'm updating with todays findings. I have pictures just not able to post them until I get to a computer that has a card reader.

I think these chickens have lice or mites, when I was putting the spray on them today I was able to see where some of the yellow crud is breaking up and I could see little red bugs crawling around. I don't know if the bugs are secondary to the yellow crud but I am going to dip them later today and keep using the spray as well. I'm also going to treat their whole QT coop and run for bugs now as well.

On a sad note one of three was dead this morning, she was totally flat and stiff , she was the weakest so I'm wondering if the two stronger birds smashed her when they huddled together for the night.

I'm thinking it probably started out as a severe mite infestation which irritated the skin to such a degree that it became moist with serous exudate which left it susceptible to the fungal infection. A lot of serous exudate will crust when exposed to air but leaves the underlying skin macerated and moist which of course is prime real estate for bacterial/fungal growth. How miserable these babies must have been. Keep us updated.

Dawn dish soap also works well to kill bugs.

Today the birds that lived are looking better.

Here are a couple pictures of the most mild case, in the worst bird that died this stuff your seeing was an inch thick in some places!







Today some of it was coming off the feathers after being sprayed down for several days with antifungal spray and being dipped for lice/mites.

I also just read someone elses thread and saw where it was suggested to look up favus to that person. I looked it up and some of the pictures look like the what these birds did when they first came. These pictures are after treatments started.

Will get more tomorrow my 9 yr old took those two for me.

So I've had a set back in treatment the bird that was the middle case and was showing improvement is now a lot worse. The yellow stuff has taken over it's eyes which are now sealed shut by it. I tried warm water, to try to get some of it off but nothing is working I think we will have to off that one when my husband gets home.

I got a few more pictures today my nine year old wouldn't look at the worst ones eyes because it was grossing her out but she did take some of the other bird again this is the most mild case.








This is covering the birds to as you can see in the above pictures it grows together to for a coating over the skin the skin underneath is normal.

So what the chicken here has is not the same. This one is a lump/patch growing only on the foot. I still gave her the nystatin and we'll see how it does.

I have never heard of 'favus' but from what I've seen and read of your post, it is certainly a feasible possibility. If the birds are getting better with antifungal treatments, then I would conclude it was a fungal infection. Kudos to you for your hard work and determination!

And, I learned something I never knew which is always a bonus!

I hope the birds have made a recovery. I can share some pictures of what I have been going through with the silkie with the scaley leg mites. I took these pictures the night I got him. There were parts that were yellow and spongey. I guess I should have taken more pictures.

I soaked him in water and dish soap for a half an hour and then removed by hand what I could. I then put some coconut cream.oil on them. A week later I did this again and then I sprayed his legs with Adama Dog flea and tick spray. The following week I put oil on him again. This will take a long time (months) to heal. This photo is what I could pull off the first night. And yes it was yellow and spongey. A couple of times I got a tad too deep and he started bleeding so I had to stop.

Good job. Yes it does take a while and patience. This stuff is what constricts the toes and makes them die off. Horrid stuff.
