Yellow Labrador Owners - What color are your dog's foot pads?

Yes, this happens with many breeds, actually. It is called "winter nose" or "snow nose." Many yellow Labs will have dark noses in the summer that fade somewhat in the winter and repeat the cycle the next year. It is not understood why this happens. You can see it in many northern breeds such as Huskies and Malamutes as well. This is not considered a fault in any of these breeds and is not penalized. To differentiate between Labs with faded noses and Dudleys, check the eyerims and gum tissue of the dogs. A Dudley will have only light pink or tan skin; the other dogs will have black pigment in these areas.

Our yellow lab has a black nose and black foot pads. Here's a picture of him we took this summer. He is about 2 years old in the pictures. The second picture you can see his black pads on his back feet.

- and your lab's nose is darker) But the coloring, shape, tail - it's like a mature version of my dog!

They must be related!

I don't think Boaz is a dudley, but he's not a perfect black-pigmented Labrador. This summer his nose was practically coal-black, but as you can see in that third pic, the bridge has gotten slightly pink. I hope it will blacken over the summer again.

But if not, that's alright, too.

I love all the pictures of the lying down labs. Especially the ADORABLE one with the baby, booker!
