Hello All

My cuckoo brahma rooster has been slow for two days now. The dropping is yellowish green and runny and just today he is breathing with an open mouth and one of the eyes is almost closed.

This is all so sudden and very depressing. He was completely fine just two days ago and looks so meek and sick today. I am not where I can get him very good veterinary help and because of covid lockdown the little help I could get is not available.

Any help is appreciated!

It looks like dry fowl pox, a virus carried by mosquitoes. It lasts about 3 weeks. Are you in a warm area? Look inside his beak and throat for any yellow material, which could be wet fowl pox, the more serious type of pox. Get him drinking some water and make him a bowl of watery chicken feed and hold it up to his beak. The pox scabs on his face may be affecting his ability to see food and water. There is a vaccine for areas of heavy pox problems, and it can be given to chickens who are not showing signs. You may want to sepearte him near his own food and water. Here is some info:

Yes I am in a very hot humid area, I have also noticed a lot of mosquitoes around the cage. I will check the beak for any signs of wet fowl pox.

No signs of wet fowl pox, second day of Tylopen and some skin relief medicine. He is drinking water and eating but still sitting down and pretty inactive. Keeping my fingers crossed that he recovers from this

Most chickens do recover from the dry form, unless they cannot see to find water and food. Baby chicks have more severe illness. If he doesn’t eat or drink, you can try tube feeding him, and we can help you to learn how. If his eyes are really affected, you can use Terramycin or Neopsorin in the eyes, or Vetericyn Eye Gel. Good luck.
