I was wondering if it's okay to feed chicks leftover baked goods such as cookies or cupcakes? I'm guessing that they can't have chocolate chip anything because most animals cant have chocolate. Anyone know anything about this?

I wouldn't feed cupcakes, especially if they had frosting. It's bad for the if they are high in sugar. Chickens are okay to have a small treat of wheat bread, but I have never fed chickens cookies/cupcakes, that's for sure!

I agree...I have split an oatmeal raisin cookie and a couple fig newtons with 13 chickens but I don't make it a regular practice.

No, don't give your chicks any sweets. Sweets, such as cupcakes and cookies, have no nutritional value. In fact, the sugar won't do the chicks any good at all, especially as chicks. If you would like to give your chicks treats, give then food that has protein and vitamins to help them develop, such as hard boiled eggs,scrambled eggs, yogurt, bugs, worms, greens, and the such. Okay, thanks! I made a bad batch of cookies (I'm not a very good cook, lol) and I wanted to know if I could feed them to my chicks instead of throwing them away! Haha. But thanks for the information! Very helpful

Well, mine sure enjoy multi-grain muffins. Of course these are homemade just for them to eat. No sugar added!

Here is the recipe:

1 cup whole-wheat flour
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup oatmeal
1/4 cup flax-seed
1 cup oat bran
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon fine salt
2 large eggs
1 3/4 cups buttermilk
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 cup chopped dried fruit medley

Whisk flours, oat bran, flax-seed, oatmeal, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl.

Lightly beat the eggs in a medium bowl. Stir in the buttermilk, oil. Stir the liquid mixture into the flour mixture until moist Dough will be thick Fold in the dried fruit. Divide the batter evenly in muffin cups. . Bake in preheated 375 degree oven until firm when pressed gently, about 25 minutes.

I only tried this because we had older flour, etc that needed to be used up. No use in just tossing it out.

When it called for 1 cup of oat bran, I might also try to sub it using 1 cup of their kibbles instead!

Now, mind you, This recipe is just used as a TREAT for the chickens. I'd never use it as a sole source for their daily diet!
