YO GEORGIANS! :)

The following eggs have made it to "lockdown" (y'all know I don't do the lockdown thing) from the excess of the school project. Abmaddox, both of your speckled FCM eggs made it so far, and I believe all of the brown ones here came from you. I know I kept the one against the front of the thermometer on the right, because it's a rose color and looked so cool to me.

All of the green eggs came from my own hens, including hens that have since been chicken-napped by predators, so I'm looking forward to hatching many of those out!

And the white or tinted eggs are all silkie eggs that came from my now-missing white silkie roo.

So these eggs represent a lot of chickens that have since been removed by possums, raccoons, and probably a dog. But 16 eggs in LD from 18 extra eggs is pretty **** good (I told you carcar...). The only two I lost were both darker eggs from abmaddox's group that didn't even show signs of development. And they were the same EXACT shade of brown, so it's probably the very same hen that laid them.

The actual classes that are hatching eggs should have theirs around Monday. I'm about to text the teacher here in a few to see how they are doing so far. She obviously has many more of my EE eggs from hens I've lost, and thank goodness I marked all of those to get them all back!

Oh, and ignore the digital thermometers in there. They are all sorts of F**ked up. I'm relying on the unseen standard thermometer laying down in the back, behind both digital ones. I was hoping to use the digital ones to get an accurate reading on humidity, but that seems to be pointless now too!

Love all the colors! And 16 out of 18 is fantastic!

Our two big Marans roosters are suffering from something similar right now. We have them isolated and so far no one else is showing signs.

I am praying this is just due to the all the heavy rain we've had. My chicks were fine until recently. It's like they have a cold, or a sinus infection. I don't do antibiotics, so I don't know how I can help them, outside of quarantine in a warm & dry environment.

Maybe. My sister's cornish rocks kept dying off, and I found they were all seriously infected with mites. I treated the mite issue, but also put them all on heavy antibiotics, and the deaths stopped. Some of the symptoms of a serious mite infestation are the same - discharge, lethargic, keeping eyes shut, etc. So they could have had both. Aside from those, and chicks I resold, I have only gotten two bantams. One died of similar issues, and the other is alive and healthy.

I will dust them with DE, but I don't think it's mites. Sorry to hear about your loses!

What I notice (besides the fun colored eggs) is that your two thermometers/hygrometers are registering so differently! I use three in mine, and they all have different readings! LOL Makes it hard to get the right settings! Although, I think I have mine where I know that the reading on Thermometer #1 is good for temp but not right for humidity. But thermometer # 2 shows the right humidity but not temp. Thermometer #3 is an average of both! hahhah

There are several different things going around this time of year. Infectious Bronchitis, infectious Coryza, and Mycoplasmas. These are all respiratory illnesses. Most cases are brought into your chickens by wild birds trying to eat your chicken food, or pooping in your chicken yard. Other cases are brought into your flock by carrier chickens introduced into a healthy flock. Other than putting your chickens in a closed up environment, there is little you can do about them catching some of this stuff. In most cases, the mortality rate is low. You may lose some of the weaker chicks/chickens, but I think you can buy some 'add to the water' medications to help your chickens. (Sulfadimethoxine is the safest to use) . Good luck with your chickens! I know we love them all and hate when they are sick. They are like children!

The silkies are all developing! I'm not certain on the others because I have only candled once. I will be doing a dull candle tonight. I think. Lol.
. Awesome! So glad to hear the silkies are doing well. Hopefully at least half of the Cochins will be good when you check them. If not, we'll try again when the girls start laying again. Like I said, three of mine are broody and I have two that are simply in strike and have been for almost two weeks...they're starting to tick me off. There's no reason for them not to be laying. That all said, I have one cochin hen in the breeding house that's laying and I'm pretty sure she's the one laying infertile egg. Ugh, I wish they'd all get on the same page.

. I'm wondering if it's the weather as well. All this rain an cold/hot/cold/hot crap can't be good for them. I have a few that have started making a weird gobble sound...almost like a sneeze but sounds more like a turkey. All are getting dusted then dosed with VetRX tomorrow just in case.

Yes, they are my babies. But they aren't exactly pets, since we use the flock for dual-purpose. It just sickens me to see something die, when it's not being killed for meat. And of course, all the time & money I put into them...

But that's why I won't use antibiotics. We will be harvesting these birds in like 6 weeks, and I raise chickens so that I can have meat without antibiotics. So it will defeat the purpose if I treat them. I just wish I could figure out a natural way to treat them. I understand illnesses like Coryza are not cureable, and the survivors will be carriers for life. But I want them to be healthy for harvest-time.

Grrrr.
