I am wondering if too much protein and too little grass early on causes them mortal issues.
Maybe. Mine were allowed to have grass starting about 24 hours after they got out of the shell. They weren't allowed to swim until they were three days old, but grass was immediate.

They couldn't get the grass without a LOT of work with their beaks, but eventually they got it. Now all I see is a head down, and a trail of shorter grass behind them as they move!

Too cute and I love the names! How are the eggs I gave you? I had to use some of the eggs from those pens last weekend and the Silkie BBS eggs were 100% fertile out of six eggs. The Cochins were only 50%. I thought about you when I was checking them and wondered how the hatch was going. I have a some natural hatches going here...three broody Cochins. Two are sitting on project eggs I slid under them because they were sitting on nothing and one is sitting on 5 of her own and 4 silkies I gave her. I'm anxious to see how things with you and with the broodies.

The silkies are all developing! I'm not certain on the others because I have only candled once. I will be doing a dull candle tonight. I think. Lol.
