YO GEORGIANS! :)

Update on the little commercial meat hen we got! She doesn't seem to have bumble foot, no black scab, the sacs are flat and aren't filled with pus. It seems like she may just have a deformity. At any rate, her leg has become stronger and she no longer just sits. Shes standing and moving around and she's starting to learn how to get around on her foot. Her feathers are growing in and she looks wonderful. Nature has such a fantastic way of healing it's little creatures and it has been amazing watching her recover. :)

I'm learning that chickens are one of the most resilient creatures! Phoenix would have had a good recovery IF I had known where his bandaging was, and was able to change it properly to keep the wound moist. I've got another chick recovering from a split scalp right now. I tried testing him with a broody sumatra, and it REALLY didn't work out. But I just took his stitches out and he's doing great!

Sorry to hear about the mallard though. Where are you located again? I may be interested, depending on how far away you are, and how many females I get out of the seven ducks I have now. But they are all different breeds (mostly pekin).

Hello all i had a hen die on me the other day we thought she had a inpacted crop we had Somone clean it out and she died about six hours later but she was acting funny prior to having her crop cleaned out after she died we did autopsy on her and her insides were black it was almost like her whole digestive system was rotten there was nothing much left of it she had bright green poop and she was lethargic has anyone ever heard of this before because I have know idea what it could be thanks

Insides being rotten - particularly the digestive system - sounds like Cocci. It attacks the digestive system, and literally eats away at the intestinal tract, and other parts. That's why many who have it show bloody poop - because their digestive tract is bleeding into their own poop. But not all of them show that sign. But the fact that you said her WHOLE digestive system was rotten tells me it could have started further up, before the intestinal tract, which would be the reason for no bleeding. That would have caused her to stop eating, and of course, be lethargic since she wasn't absorbing any nutrients into her body.

Watch the others that she shared a coop with. If you see any poop with pink, red, or clear mucus-like substance, start treating immediately for Cocci. Tractor Supply sells a small bag of "Corid" that you can use to treat them - just follow instructions on the back of the bag.

Hi guys! I'm sorry about the continued losses, CHickDancer. I'm sure I'll be a wreck when something gets a hold of one of my animals - knocking on wood and thankful that I haven't had to deal with that so far.

Flowerbh, I Love your "blended family"! I'm so thrilled with the ducks I have, and it would be awesome to a broody do the hard work for me next spring when they start laying!

Big thanks to GAMarans and Roboduck (yes, I said it, not a typo. Unless that should be hyphenated, haha) for the duckling pick up and duck sitting service! I'm so thrilled to have Anconas from two different sources, and three Welsh Harlequins who might be by happy accident a trio :fl
Between the little ducks and my flock of juvenile chickens from the spring madness, along with the bunnies, the farm is an entertaining place to be :)!

I had posted photos of my broody chicken with her baby ducks and several people said I would have to be careful because when the ducks start wadding in the water, the hen goes crazy because she thinks they are drowning and tries to save them! I guess I won't have that happen since I already have a person wanting both of these ducks. AND the ones in the bator. I think these are both girls, which is too bad for me because I WANT FEMALES! But, a promise is a promise,,,, so that just means putting more eggs in the bator after these others hatch! hahah!

On my way to NYC for my Grandsons baptism. Two of my other daughters will be there, too! The daughter whose son is getting baptized has a birthday on the 10th and then mother's day is Sunday! It will be soooo much fun! And I can't wait for them all to see me 27 pounds lighter! DH has to stay home with the chickens and dogs! (And renters!) Awe, too bad! tee hee hee!

Ok, I have a question for y'all to weigh in on. I have had turkey eggs incubating at abmaddox's place since my girls started laying this season, but the first batch quit and the others are only about halfway along. GAM has a batch, so now I want to get some eggs of my own started before the girls quit for the summer or something weird. The problem is that we'll be out of town again for three days around memorial day. If my house sitter is unable to turn eggs (no turner), do we think it's better to move the bator to someone else's house for three days, or just bring it with us to the cabin if I have to move it anyway (not a long drive and the car has an adapter)? I'm really not wanting to put off incubating my own batch of turkeys until after memorial day :(. I told Mr. Zoo that we can't schedule any trips next year during baby season! I've gotten new gray hairs over leaving expectant moms, newborns, eggs in other people's incubators, and brooders full of chicks!

Thanks for tagging me!

I may not be online much for a while. My Husband put my laptop on the roof of the van while being helpful and busy and then accidentally took it for a ride. It didn't like the roof I guess so it jumped off. Dead. It took so many photos and my blog work with it. -sigh-
