Catching up on my posts as of late- thoughts are coming in waves so sorry for multi posts..

My Mama Mallard is most definitely sitting now. And since I cannot for the LIFE of me find where she IS, I guess I'll be seeing babies around the first week of June, lol. I just can't get over how sly she and Papa are- every year I've always been able to tail her and find her nest at least to help keep an eye on it.. This year she's got me beat. LOL! Amazing.

As a newbie should I just look into buying laying hens? Or are chicks not so bad after all? How many weeks until chicks leave the house and go into the coop? I am home during the day, so yes I have the time, but are chicks too much for a first timer? I'm looking for a variety of goods egg layers... buff orpingtons, golden comets, rir, barred rocks, australorps for example. Any thoughts?

Chicks can go without brooder lamps around 4 weeks old. But you can move them out as soon as one week old, if you have a brooder lamp in their enclosure/coop. I have a rabbit hutch that I tend to put chicks in (that will be getting FILLED tomorrow!) until they out-grow that. It has a heat lamp in one corner, and the big pen also has a heat lamp hanging under a giant old semi-hood.

But in MY personal opinion, I'd go with chicks. They aren't overwhelming at all. But they ARE more likely to become used to you and friendly, and ready to be picked up and held, if you get them as babies. If you get them as adults, their first priority is finding their spot in the pecking order. And since you aren't out there with them at night kicking them off of the good roosting spots, be-friending you does not interest them at all.

About the bee ideas:

If anyone does it, PLEASE let me know! I can't raise bees because my nephew is HIGHLY allergic (we're talking epi-pen always at the ready for any bug bite/sting, and a rush to the hospital following the injection). So bees are definitely a no-go for me.

But I happen to know that two tablespoons of locally-grown honey will get rid of most seasonal allergy symptoms, because it overwhelms your body with the source - pollen. I don't have seasonal allergies, but **** near everyone else here does! I do, however, like local honey in a cup of hot tea when I'm sick. So long-story-short, we need locally grown honey in this house! So if any of you plan to raise the bees, I'll be your bestest best customer!

I know this doesn't help, but it really depends on you and what you want, or what you can handle. If you aren't in a rush for eggs, and you are only getting a few, go ahead and start with chicks. If you think it might be overwhelming, start with older birds. It also depends on what you can find.

I really don't want mail order chicks, guess I need to start asking on these threads who has chicks in the next month or so and who has the most variety available. I really don't want to fifa with quarantining birds right now. If I get chicks from several different ppl will I have to quarantine each time I add to the brooder?

For anyone in Northern GA. I'm in Hillsboro TN (about an hour and a half off the border of GA)


I have 22 chicks left if anyone is interested. These ones have got to go. Found out today that DH is allergic to bird dander and they cant stay inside. 4$ each. If you get all, 3$ each. EDIT: BYM (GLW over RIR)

LOL! Just ask GAM, I've tried SO hard; she's shown up while I was psycho-stalking Mama and she and GAM jr even helped..

Well, your long shot may be even longer, because I thought that in order for the honey to help allergies, it has to be from your immediate town/area, to ensure you're eating from what's actually growing in your area..

Nope, it's regional. So the entire southeast is good for it.
