YO GEORGIANS! :)

About the bee ideas:

If anyone does it, PLEASE let me know! I can't raise bees because my nephew is HIGHLY allergic (we're talking epi-pen always at the ready for any bug bite/sting, and a rush to the hospital following the injection). So bees are definitely a no-go for me.

But I happen to know that two tablespoons of locally-grown honey will get rid of most seasonal allergy symptoms, because it overwhelms your body with the source - pollen. I don't have seasonal allergies, but **** near everyone else here does! I do, however, like local honey in a cup of hot tea when I'm sick. So long-story-short, we need locally grown honey in this house! So if any of you plan to raise the bees, I'll be your bestest best customer!

My neighbor has bees and raw local honey. They sell it or sometimes barter for eggs. Dawsonville area

Hello all I have a question my rooster just fell of the roost tonight so I picked him up and was looking at him and he has lice all in his feathers what is the best thing to us to get ride of them thanks
Hi Blue, I'm in the midst of a long lice battle myself. Personally I tried DE several times but I think it may be better for prevention. Was gonna use hubby's Sevin dust since others here suggest it but I decided at the last minute to get the garden/poultry dust that TSC sells. Active ingredient is permethrin.. One dusting on each hen's vent and two days later I couldn't find a bug on them to save my life. :D

I repeat the dusting this coming Wednesday (10 days out), and after that I'll use my DE monthly to see if that keeps them away. Good luck whatever you choose!

Everyone was right about the culprits! Myself, and all of you!

The traps each caught something today - a possum in the small one, a raccoon in the big one!

But that wasn't all. The giant pen holding all of the growing chicks, the ducks, the geese, and now the frizzles, had a visitor this morning! I heard a lot of crows going crazy outside making caws left and right, and glanced out to see something large move away from the gate of the pen and run down the side. I didn't have glasses on or contacts in, but when he ran back around to the front, I knew it was NOT one of my cats!

I went racing outside in flip flops and scared off... a red fox! He got two chicks that had wandered out of the pen. The fox can't get IN but right now they are small enough to get OUT - until I put screen on it tonight! Unfortunately, it was a BLRW and the white polish cockerel. Both fairly valuable to me. (Why couldn't he take an EE baby? I'm overrun with those!)

I found the white polish completely gone with a single bloody spot about the size of a dime on his stomach. The BLRW was alive but struggling to hold his head up, and his intestines were pulled out of a small hole in his abdomen. He died within seconds in my hands. As I looked for more, I heard the ruckus of crows move way off into the distance (following him). I went to check for the big EEs that free-range and all three were safe. As I walked back to the pen, I heard the crows returning. I got in front of the pen (he approached from the back of it), crouched down and stayed completely still. I was hoping he'd AT LEAST peek his head around the corner where I had part of a 2x4 waiting. But if not, I also wanted to scare him off really good - from up close. The crows probably got about 10 feet from the pen, and I heard the footsteps of the fox. My cat Max was out there trying to get my attention, but he must have seen the fox because he started to stare and crouch low like he was about to charge or pounce.

Max took off quickly in that direction, and the sound of the crows followed and left the area again. A few minutes later, they stopped with only an occasional caw. I knew with me in flip flops and the low brush in the woods (and thorns everywhere) I wouldn't be able to keep up. I don't know if Max will try to go after him or not. He's a big cat, but lightweight and used to fighting. He's not fixed yet, so he's usually fighting other male cats that wander over here, or get dumped here. Against a fox though? I don't see that being much of a match. But I can't follow them fast enough, so I have to hope for the best. At least the fox had something "follow" him away from the property, so hopefully he'll be scared just enough to stay away until I can get the screen and cover the gate with it today.

Yes, depends on what I can find. So true. I really don't want mail order chicks, guess I need to start asking on these threads who has chicks in the next month or so and who has the most variety available. I really don't want to fifa with quarantining birds right now. If I get chicks from several different ppl will I have to quarantine each time I add to the brooder?
I would try to get them from the same place and feed medicated start and grow for the first few weeks. Chicks have a weaker immune system than adults and mixing chicks from different places is risky. If you get your birds from different people I would go with older chicks(8weeks +) or adults. Just keeping your brooder or coop as clean as possible will eliminate a lot of problems. I like to clean my coop/brooder often and I use a pump sprayer with about a cup of bleach to a gallon of water and mist the entire brooder/coop lightly. Be sure to wash out the food and water containers frequently, I also use bleach for this. I have four breeds... Marans, Crested Cream Legbars, Rhodebars, and Olive eggers.

Good news: Max just returned, and he's not even dirty. So either the fox got scared just because he was followed, or he gave up. Either way, Max clearly didn't get into a scuffle with him.
