YO GEORGIANS! :)

I have found that I can't equate keeping livestock (chickens in this instance) with keeping pets like dogs or cats. First of all, they die. Chickens have all sorts of hindrances to survival; for example, today a red tailed hawk killed a couple of my free ranging birds. Keep your birds as you see fit and love them for what they are, a very important form of livestock.

A lot of my poultry friends want to make pets out of these birds, but they are not pets, they are livestock.
UH OH! I think you might have just poked a hornet's nest!!

Mine are definitely pets and I'm sure they will live infinitely longer than my hamster

Lets hope! So many predators. It really is such a toss up. I was reading on another site how that person strongly felt like free ranging is the way to go with chickens but it clearly makes them more vulnerable to attack. Possible short life free during the days or a more secure life confined to a smaller space.... The hamster I think while having a short life is safer than my chickens have been out in the yard. No less loved though! No less entertaining either! :)

Sad news on the home front. I went out to lock our girls up tonight and after a head count someone was missing.

We have one chicken that limps(we had to bring her in a few weeks ago for a week while we gave her some TLC and polyvisol. She started walking again but did so with a limp.

Anyway she was laying by the wood pile with a bit of blood on her beak. She was still warm so I think she died about 7-8pm. She would have been 18 weeks tomorrow. I'm so sad that we lost a chicken but I know it's a fact of life. My kids are sad too but no tears.

RIP Delilah!

I have some eggs that were bred two frizzles I didnt want them to be ..... this will be the only batch I do the cochin and frizzle were laying in the same box. And now I have 3 days left till EHD and where I thought only 3-5 out of 13 (was more been pulling bad eggs) there might be more. I wanted to sell frizzles but if they are frizzle frizzle not frizzle cochin I dont think it would be right of me to. Especially when my frizzle hen is already pretty much a small frazzle I got from another owner. Poor thing. I didnt know what I was doing at first. But I bought a polish roo to mix with the frazzled hen.... I hope these chicks turn out ok
