YO GEORGIANS! :)

The run is bare...

Free range them in the evening? That is what we do, one pen a night (so the roosters don't go after on another!) When the sun goes down the chickens put themselves to bed, we close the coop door and all is well. We try to given them all treats in the evening. Either garden or kitchen scraps, bread, really few things are off limit. So when they are free ranging they keep an eye on their people who they know will give them things. They stick close by! We also give them yard clippings and save some to through in during the week as well. Some places sell chicken toys!

We have been letting our older chickens semi-free range most of the day in the fenced in area of our yard. We plan to put up new fencing soon and enclose more of our yard so that we can let the younger chickens out to semi-free range also. I think we need to get some of the avian netting to place over the entire fenced in area because of our tiny Silkie chickens. They are between 10 and 12 weeks old now but are so much smaller than the larger breed chickens and after seeing a hawk sitting on our kids old swing set surveying our land, I think we need the fenced area more secure from all sides. Until the fencing goes up, we have been throwing grass clippings into the large run for the younger chickens.

have a 25' x 25' run with avian netting above. I cannot free range outside of the run. I have already lost 3 birds to a copperhead and hawks before the netting. So, I will try cabbage, adding grass clippings and see how they like that :)

My pilgrims are sure growing in confidence. They are showing the ducks who's boss. They are being food dominant. Threw out a pile of cracked corn and the 8 geese ran off the ducks. Threw out another pile. The geese split their forces and took both piles. Threw out another pile. Again they took the hill. 6 piles later and the ducks were finally able to sneak into enemy lines and infiltrate the corn supply. Then they called a treuce and all went for a swim.
