YO GEORGIANS! :)

here it is 107 in the shade...Ive been throwing frozen bottles in the waterers, offering lots of water melon and other fruit and ive put a kiddy pool in the big girls pen so they can get their feet wet. i also run a fan in the shady part of the run where they all hang out. so far everyone seems to be doing ok..however i'm up for anything else i can do to make things better for them

Debs55, that's about what I'm doing. I do one more thing though. During the hottest part of the day, I gather the feed they've wasted (my feeder sits on a large tray) and add water. This makes a mash. One more way to get liquids in them. I had left over electrolyte water and threw it in their wading tray. They not only walk in it they sometimes drink it...so what the heck.

well,i lost 2 hens yesterday to this stupid weather we are having.sometimes i just want to get rid of all outside animals.i was born and raised here but i have lived in a lot of places and georgia has the worst weather.
i was just out putting more shade clothes and frozen water bottles in the water bowls.the heat index is 110 degrees here.i got so hot and nauseated i had to come in.i had not even stopped sweating yet and it clouded up,started raining heavily and then starting HAILING. :barnie
georgia weather is just crazy.

I am so sorry for the loss of your hens! I try not to remind myself that Aug isn't even here yet.

I'm sorry to hear about your 2 hens. I never thougt that I would have to, but I add a small widow AC unit to my chicken coop to try to help keep my chicks cool during this horrible weather. It seems to be helping it has been keep the temp down to about 95 so far.

It's exhausting really. I say -do whatever you can and are willing to do. Tomorrow's forecast, at least here in S Ga, is a tiny bit better.

thanks guys!
i think i am going to just keep 3 breeds and sell the rest.i hate to do it but then i can put all my money into putting in electricity for A/C units.i lost one bird every year the last 2 years and then 2 so far this year and yes,i know it is not even aug.at least tomorrow it is only supposed to get to 104.

i am sending cooler thoughts for everyone elses birds and other animals.

I put a tray/shallow pan filled with water in the bottom of my coop. My chickens love it! They stand in it, sit in it, poop in it, drink out of it.....but it is helping cool them some. Also, we turned the sprinkler on during the afternoon so that it ran over part of the top of the coop to help cool things down a little (but it was still sweltering).

I live in S. GA & we had some nasty storms last night also. I worried about my 17- 3 week old chicks. When the lights started to flicker, I really started to worry about the 2 bators that I have that are full of eggs. Thankfully, the power stayed on and my babies to be were safe.
