YO GEORGIANS! :)

You need to cull your chickens NOW! They are obviously nonconformists and must be taken out before they influence the masses.

Or maybe I could get them to make inspirational tapes/videos and sell those on Ebay?

Some breeds require less light than others. You may notice when people talk about breeds, they may mention that they lay good Thru the winter b
When I was deciding on breeds I read all I could to help in the selection, but never saw mention of laying in the winter. Just cold tolerant. But guess that's where the average # of eggs per year must come from.

It must depend on more just the light? Breed and weather must be involved. I have Barred Rocks and Buff Orpingtons and they laid their usual quota all last winter. They even laid the day middle Ga hit a low of 5 F and high of 11 F. We don't do any light supplementation for them. But all I have ever seen reported is the duration of daylight. Glad my girls haven't received the notice.
OH NO!!! Should not have bragged how my hens lay so routinely. Only one egg today…Guess my girls have been surfing the net, found BYC and now know they're supposed to be on fall break!

If they don't all lay tomorrow, I'll have to cancel their DSL. And maybe their dish network too.

I have 24 chickens old enough to be laying and have only been getting 4-8 eggs a day! Will let you know how the light is working after a week. Like I said, I just wasn't paying attention to the day light hours this fall. Been too busy.

I was down to getting 1 egg a day when we put a light in the coop and now up to 7 (Our most!) a day. It was very worth it. We put in a small LED strip in (no heat) and we just leave it on as it isn't a lot of light and the chickens don't seem stressed by it. It is enough light though, clearly!

Just wanted to mention we were in Young Harris, Ga the other weekend at brass town valley resort. Absolutely beautiful! Not sure if any of you live up that way, if so, how lucky you are!

Anybody want a friendly pig? About 2 years old and 200+ pounds. We were going to get him but he's too big for our fence to hold up to his pushing and scratching on it. He will require a proper hog wire enclosure. He was loving the attention while we were there. I scratched his neck and his butt fell over. Guess I found "the spot". They need to give him a new home because they are about to have a baby and won't have time for him. His name is Fonzie.

Info for newbies: your hens need 14 hours of daylight to produce eggs. It's not the cold in the winter that keeps them from laying. It's that the daylight hours are so short. right now we are only getting about 10 hours. If you want them to keep laying, you will need to add artificial lighting. Best to put a light on a timer and set the timer to turn on at 4 am and off at 8 am. Some people choose to let their hens rest during the winter. Mine have just molted or been broody. I think it's time they lay me some eggs!
Something I have wondered about and maybe you know….If chickens are born with all the eggs they will lay, then does supplemental light cause Henopause at a younger age?

Not a joke, just curious.

Yes. But remember, a chicken could live up to 20-25 years. Considering all of the predators and other things that can go wrong, most chickens don't live that long so I don't think I would worry about them not having eggs after 20 years.

A chicken will lay her best within the first two years and then egg production will drop about 10 percent.
