YO GEORGIANS! :)

I'm letting my birds out at 6:45 now to keep those roos quiet. Does anyone use the automatic door opener that I have seen online? Seriously, I'm grumpy in the early morning. Guess this is chicken life

Hello. Haven't posted here in a while. I am still waiting for my Buff Orpingtons to lay. I think we are getting close. Two days in a row now one of them is hanging out in the coop for a good part of the day trying to figure out where she wants to nest (there are several options). They all free range. My Rhode Island Reds have been laying for about 7 weeks now, almost everyday!

I have been reading about whether or not to use artificial lighting for them during the winter. I have already decided they don't need heat as it doesn't get that cold here in South Georgia. I am not sure I want to bother with the lighting either, but if the stop laying altogether I might reconsider. Someone at my husband's work told him that they won't lay in the winter at all, but I am not sure that's true.

My silkie has stopped laying altogether. She laid an egg every day for 10 days or so and then just quit!

Here is a picture of my Roo, ain't he pretty? :)

Shaking tail feathers cute! Not all chickens stop laying in winter even without artificial light. Rhode Island Reds are a top choice for winter layers. Out of an entire winter mine kept right on laying- it does get cold with lots of snow in the mountains but collectively for the entire winter there was only two weeks that we didn't get at least one egg from 4 layers. (Every now and then there wouldn't be an egg, added those days up for a total of 2 weeks out of 5 months of winter weather. Great egg layers!)

Yea, nice Rooster. I only do the heat lamp thing when I know it will be at freezing temperature and only because the heat lamp helps keep their water bowls from freezing. Chickens do better in our southern cold than they do in our southern summers. Every now and then, a chicken with a big straight comb may get some frost bite on their combs and wattles. Watch for that. To help keep their toes warm, my roosts are flat and wide which allows for them to sit on their toes and keep them warm. I also put some plastic sheeting up around part of the indoor coop run to help screen off most of the cold wind. I keep one side unscreened for ventilation. Since the roosts are high off the ground, most of the sheeting is high up so at night they are much warmer. Other than keeping the water from freezing, there is usually no need for heat lamps in our southern state. (Just make sure your chickens are all feathered out and that they aren't too young to withstand cold!) Duck are fine in the winter, too. After all, they have such nice down jackets to keep them warm!

Son got off the bus yesterday very excited..."Mom, I am the ONLY kid that is raised like this on a farm! With animals you know, chickens and the hogs and stuff! I am like the only kid that climbs trees and can bust firewood!" It made me smile to see him so happy yet sad that we don't live in a city yet there aren't many kids that get to experience this:)
