YO GEORGIANS! :)

Well my broody still isn't sitting on the eggs. She stopped at day 10 and today is day 17. She now only sits on them at night. I posted over in the incubating section but no one responded. :(

Candled the eggs last night and saw movement in at least 3, the other eggs are dark so I can't see in them as well. I do see veins in them all though.

1. If there are veins, does that mean they are still alive? Or will a blood ring form when they die?
2. They don't look like eggs of 16 day old embryos, they look smaller, could growth slow since she isn't sitting?
3. I don't have an incubator or another broody, any suggestions? Can I build an incubator? I dunno, I'd love to have a couple hatch but not sure that will happen at this point. I guess I have hope since I saw movement in 3.

Good luck-remember patience and good food treats:) If I were near you I'd be saying "Free chickens? Score!"
I wish we lived closer. You would definitely be welcome to some of them. So far three of the hens and one rooster made it over the fence. I put the rest of the netting up but still need more. Now I'm trying to figure out how to keep them all from getting soaked. I need another coop! I wish we were able to make another coop just for the free rangers but my DH has been having to travel a good bit lately with work so we just don't have the time. I will just try to take care of them the best I can until someone decides they want some of them.

I have two Blue Copper Marans pullets that are 9 months old. All of a sudden last week, they stopped laying eggs, and I haven't gotten a single once since then. Oddly enough, until they took a break, they were laying machines, 1 a day or every other day. I know (or hope) they will start laying again soon. They are not broody. I picked them up and examined them yesterday, and everything looks fine...vent looked comparable to the other hens, and they didn't have any signs of distress or of being egg-bound. Has anyone experienced this with this breed? They are eating & drinking normal. Thank you!

Sounds like they are growing. If you see veins, they are ok. You will see blood rings if they die. Yes, the chicks will grow a little slower in a cooler environment. These eggs could go on for up to 5 days longer than normal. Don't give up! Let us know!

Can you buy a large Tupperware container? Those huge gray ones? You can cut a hole in the side and put it up off the ground with bricks or logs. They can go in there and stay dry. Like these, except with the lids on them.

I did put one of those down with some straw to see if the girls would lay their eggs in the box. One of the hens laid her egg about 3' from the box in the dirt. I'll just keep working with them. Hopefully I will find something for them to roost in besides the trees. Oh! BTW, all three of our EEs are laying now. All of the eggs are a blue green. There is an EE hen in the free range group but so far I haven't seen an egg from her. EEs love'em!

So, today since it was raining, I only went out to check for eggs a few times. Here is what I found in the first nest.

Here is what I found in the second nest:

So do you think the government will give me one of those wasteful government grants to study whether my chickens would rather lay eggs with others who lay the same colored eggs?
