Hey folks, I'm looking for Delawares - does anyone here breed or have them? They don't need to be particularly great strains, I'm just hoping to avoid ordering from hatcheries. I don't have the resources/supplies to hatch my own but would happily buy chicks, juveniles or adults (preferably that would breed and set).

BlazeJester, I'm in Trenton, SC. I raise Dels. I have several chicks available right now. They are just shy of a month old, about 2-3 weeks old. $3 each, I do not ship them. I'm about 5 minutes off Exit 11 on I-20.

ADD ME!!! YIPPEE ~ ANY OF YOU IN THE ATL OR EAST OF THE ATL???

We are in Ellijay Ga. and have almost 60 chickens. Big coop. Actually old hay barn renovated to a big roost room and smaller nesting room. We have big 16x40 out door pen enclosed with 1 inch hex wire to keep chickies safe from racoons etc. But they go out in the morning and in at night. When we are not here, they have the big pen to play/live in.

I have a question tho...we have recently been inindated with mice! When the chickies see them, they will eat them...Yeah! But the mice mostly come out at night when everyone is on the roost. I have heard where rats will chew feet or toes off of sleeping chickens. Mice don't do that do they? I have not had a case of that yet. Just like to look ahead and prevent issues when possible. I just ordered 4 humane mouse traps that work great. Just couldnt find them til now. How does anyone else deal with the mice?

and also we use deep straw for flooring with D.E in the winter. but this summer the heat was such I took it out to let them access the cooler dirt floor. But it is not easy getting the poop out. I have read where some use sand as their flooring. Saying it dries the poop out really well. Just wondering how they they get those poops out. When I shovel the straw/poop out, I put it in our compost bins. I laugh thinking of myself with a extra large pooper scooper. haha But sand sounds cooler for the chickies too.
I'm getting river sand today for my coop. I have read up on it and it sounds great. The sand does dry out the poop and you just scoop it out like a cats litter box. You don't have to change it every month like straw or pine savings so it saves money. It is cooler in the summer and they can also dust themselves. Never use play sand as it is hazardous to their lungs and can kill them. But the river rock also acts as grit so you don't have to buy any of that extra. I can't wait to get mine today and fix up their coop.
