YO GEORGIANS! :)

Maggie, the new duck we adopted is doing great! She and my drake, Tinker, seem to really like each other. They chatter together constantly. Today, I let them all out to go to the lake. Maggie followed the other ducks out of the pen and right down to the lake. They have been swimming, diving and splashing around all morning. I think she is happy. Oh, and I found 3 duck eggs today! So all three females laid an egg!

This is so sweet and your background makes me want to go back to the mountains. I just love it in North GA.

Carcar, does that mean Olive Eggers in the furture?
Actually I'm working on that right now with the new boy I got.

Speaking of... I know when you TAKE a rooster away, eggs are still fertile for a few weeks. But what about when you add a new one during that time? I guess until the old is phased out you have a split chance on who's the sire?

Yea, you would have to wait for 3 weeks just to make sure all sperm are gone. It is possible for a hen to have multiply rooster's sperm at the same time. She could lay a bunch of eggs from different dads. Once the new rooster is there, once he does his 'thing', fertile eggs could start on the second day, but most books recommend starting to collect eggs at day 4.

Well, my eggs are set! I put 47 eggs in there from every hen I have except for the Brown Leghorn and maybe the Golden Cuckoo Marans and of course, not from my Broody cuckoo marans,. but, like I said, a lot will probably not be fertile because I only have one rooster to about 25 hens!!! (Every mans dream!) I wonder if he will be willing to share once the other boys grow up!

Carcar, are you setting yours tonight or later? How many eggs are you setting? Ohhhh, and my broody should hatch hers on Thurs/Fri. I put them in late so expecting most of them on Friday. I have no idea if they are ok. I only candled them at day 10 and haven't looked since. She is one of my few hens who will bite your hand off if you try to get to her eggs. Most of my other broodies are sweet and don't mind you looking at her eggs!
