how old are yours? 6 of mine are 9 weeks and the other 2 are 8 weeks old.Papa Chaz- yes, I believe I have four pullets and a cockerel. Mine cockerel is for darn sure, because of his largest-of-all and RED comb, and thicker legs. Mine are actually older than yours. I was thinking same age.
As for feathering, even with my obvious cockerel, there is ZERO.. And I mean zero difference between him and the girls as far as tail/feathering yet.
So, is it common for us to have to show them where the roost is at first? I have noticed that I had to do this with my little ones, 6 wks old. They will roost on them, but only when I am near the brooder, I guess because that is where I sit and talk to them or where I take them out to love on them or let them play. At night, they all huddle together and sleep on the floor.how old are yours? 6 of mine are 9 weeks and the other 2 are 8 weeks old.
They've all been sleeping either piled up in the corner, or on the walk board up TO the roosts and nest boxes. I have found evidence of some of them sleeping in the nest boxes, so last night after dark I physically put them up on the roost.
Tonight after dark, I went out and 5 of the 14 were on the roost and all the rest were either on the walk up boards or packed in a nest. Even the australorps and leghorns. So tonight they ALL got put up on the roosts. I don't want to have to block off the nests, but if that happens again the next few nights I will.
any idea how many people are going to show up on May 2? just a curiosity thing.....
I mentioned it to the wife, looks like it will be us and the grand daughter, probably get there 10ish.....
the last time I had chicks, back in 2011, I didn't have to show them. I did have 4 or 5 adults already though. The coop was divided for safety purposes, but they could see each other through the chicken wire divider. Also had the run done that way...So, is it common for us to have to show them where the roost is at first? I have noticed that I had to do this with my little ones, 6 wks old. I didn't start them out with any kind of a roost board in the brooder. I didn't do it with these either. It surprised me somewhat that after putting all the AM's up there last night that over half of them were back up there tonight. Of course the others squawked about being handled, but they'll forget tomorrow morning when I give them some meal worms, LOL. Oh, and the 4 year old grand daughter comes over tomorrow, and she ALWAYS wants papa to 'go get some worms' so she can watch them play keep away.
I have given directions to 3 members here. Each are bringing at least one guest. From just reading through threads, I'd suspect at least 6 to 8 members plus their guests.
