YO GEORGIANS! :)

No. Most of my dogs are afraid of snakes but the coonhound grabbed up the kingsnake and shook violently (which scares the heck out of me since he would almost certainly do that with a rattler or a copperhead too).

Kingsnake had a couple of marks but I got the dogs away and he left the yard. I don't kill snakes, I keep a couple of garters as pets so I don't want to harm them.

Timber rattlers are rarely aggressive (unless you step on them or come way to close), even when I was shooing the one yesterday out of the coop he never once tried to strike even though he was frightened and curled up in the corner at one point. Copperheads are another matter entirely, they bite first and evaluate the situation afterwards.

I lost several young bantams last year to a ratsnake so I am paranoid and lock the coop up every night, thing is this year I have snakes coming in during the day. I will have to start closing the outdoor small run at night to keep rats out of the feeders as I suspect the snakes are attracted to the rodent scent trails and then find their way into the henhouse.
yeah they're most likely following the rodents in, although once they get a taste for eggs they may very well just come back regularly.

Several years ago, me and a buddy took a hunting trip to Flint River WMA. It was well after dark and he still wasn't back to the truck, so I went looking for him. Found him in his climbing stand, about 8 feet off the ground waiting for me. LOL he said when he'd climbed down, (after dark) he didn't know the rattlesnake was at the base of the tree until it rattled briefly and struck at the bottom of his stand. I did let him know it would have been nice if he'd have let me KNOW to look for that particular snake.......

the last snake I killed 2 years ago was one of those situations where I heard him rattling before I saw him. Not a good feeling at all, and I'm ALWAYS on the lookout for snakes when I'm out and about outside. I did have on my snake boots, but let's just say as much as I like having them, I don't want to find out for sure if they actually work

Well if he is rattling he is asking/telling you to back off in the hope he won't have to get physical and bite you. Rattling means they do NOT want conflict, so they are warning you off and hoping you will leave them in peace.

The young snake yesterday did not rattle, he didn't even notice me when I came into the coop and studied him, when I made my presence known he took a deep breath and made a hissing noise. I was staring trying to confirm if he was a timber rattler and then he started to rattle (at that point I got it).

oh yes, I fully understand and know what it means, it was just very unsettling to be able to hear him and not see him. And since that was the way in to one of my favorite hunting spots, I wasn't going to leave him for me to possibly step on in the darkness going in. I'm not one for killing every snake I see at all, not even venomous ones, but I didn't want to leave a risk hazard. That particular area, we took out 3 timber rattlers and a big copperhead within about a months time

I need some help here........
My JG hen is missing feathers from the top of her head, and the surrounding feathers look a bit raggedy. I've been checking for lice/mites, and haven't seen a thing! She's not molting, the rest of her feathers look great, and only one other hen is looking a bit raggedy up top. The little roo I have is still a little guy, so no weird lovin going on. Any thoughts?

How young IS your roo? I ask because I've seen a few who I thought were too young to care about all that but they surprised me, lol.
