I was discussing this with the wife, and the son in law. they'd have to free range, and there are dogs in the neighborhood, and hawks, and owls...........and the noise. Of course the noise could be a good thing if anyone who ain't sposed to be around comes around.....
mine free range all day and they have a tree line they go to but those little guys can fly, mine are still young so I have not heard a lot of ruckus yet. but they go to bed with the chickens and so far so good.

OOOH! y'all talking about grass, sod, greens in the run reminded me of something Isaw on Pinterest that I would like to try. Someone built a shallow raised bed, planted grass seed, stapled 1/2"(or maybe 1/4") HC over the top of the frame so that when the grass grew in full enough, the birds could eat it without digging it up from the root. So, supposedly always a constant supply. If anyone would like I can try to find the link, or if you're on Pinterest you could probably find it. I thought it looked like it might be pretty cool.
that is a really great idea if you can find the post please do

I doubt seriously if you have any where close to that much spent. I'm under $1000 on my whole setup, coop, run watering system, decorations.........of course I'm cheap and I buy the purple end warped and twisted wood when I can, but still I wouldn't be near that even if I'd bought first run off the shelf everything

but I'm not counting chickens, or feed, or vitamins, shavings etc etc.....

Oh no. I don't have the patience or the focus to hunt down the cheap stuff. Other than go online first, make a list of what I want and then walk into the lumber department, grab a dude and tell him what I want him to load up for me and swipe the CC.

I'm pretty sure it's my fault we're mostly broke. He has priorites. I do not. But they say opposites attract, right?

well while you're walking with 'the dude' ask him if there's any warped/damaged/discounted lumber sitting in the back somewhere, EVERYBODY has time for 70% off.....all the 2x4's that I needed for framing my coop walls, roof and roosts? $51.......

Like this? Bought some sod and put it under this frame. As the grass grew, the hens could only eat the tops that grew threw the wire. I would replace it with another piece of sod the next day and let the old ones grow taller again. If I had more frames, you could just leave the grass in there, but only had one frame and lots of sod so I would switch them up.

Fodder is like this and the chickens eat the whole thing, grass, seeds and roots. One pound of seed makes about 7 pounds of feed.

I have some HW cloth left over from the coop build. I see this in my run in the very near future

I want to know more about the fodder, time to start some searches

Really? because there is a GINORMOUS ant hill that popped up in the chicken yard, right where I need to build the run. 2'x2'. We have fire ants everywhere but I can't tell if these are or not. I thought about taking one for the team and letting one sting me to be sure the birds don't get hurt, but reconsidered. All I have to get rid them is some Spinosad spray(per a local farmer's recommendation to use where our well is, but it didn't seem to work on the other ant hills. Maybe l should try and catch the roaming guineas that are running loose and throw em in with the chickens? *jk

Yeah I do the same, only I have to have cash, I can't have the CC and I have a lot of unauthorized purchases according to my DH. You have priorities just not the same as his. and BTW that vid was really funny and her son is walking in the background I'm sure embarrassed as hell
