YO GEORGIANS! :)

I worked at the Rockmart police station while doing my internship and I asked everyone and have a friend that works at Polk Animal Control and even made sure with them. I had 8 rooster at one time. Now I am down to 4 but 2 are bantam cochins so I don't count them. I am actually the 2 bantam cochin roosters and my bantam cochin frizzle hen. She is at the bottom of the pecking order and the other bantam hen in there and pulling her feathers out and eating them. She targets everyone but seems to target the frizzle more.

I can't help but imagine someone in town with 499 chickens.. That must be the oldest law on the books, lol.

So today I decided that the reason my one bantam roo stays at roost a lot is definitely because of the other bantam roo. It was so funny. I chased the underdog down from the roost so I could feel whether he is malnourished.. While catching him he faced away from me the entire time. Felt his weight, felt fine to me.

Then I decided to check the top dog. He is FUNNY. He faced away from me a good bit but did face me several times. BIG MAN!! :gig He thinks he is something else!

My two roosters get along fine because they have to run from my speckled Sussex rooster. HA! That poor frizzle is almost bald on the head and most of her wing feathers that stick out are gone. I have eggs in the incubator and they could be from my tiny frizzle hen and my big speckled Sussex rooster. That will be odd for sure!

I don't mention the ordinance to anyone because I would hate for the wrong people to hear about it and think they need to update it. That is small town living. HA!

this could be more than just the pecking order. If she's pulling AND eating the feathers it could very well be a protein deficiency. What percentage of feed do you use? I have one of the australorps hens that does this as well. I started doctoring the others up with peck no more to keep her from doing it, and then she started doing it to herself. I've changed their feed to 22% protein, and doctored her back up as well. I'll need to do it again probably tomorrow night, but I'm hoping I can get her out of it before she turns cannabilistic

as for 499 chickens. Ok so they'll let you have 499 PET chickens, but you can't raise and sell them. And let's be real here, no it wouldn't necessarily be considered commercial to occasionally sell an extra chicken or so, but if anyone has 499 chickens is planning on selling them regularly, and THAT would make it a commercial operation........bahahaha, if THAT's not a perfect example of the mind set and ability to think things through for those who run things in our area, there never will be

I feed them the 22% as well and I use the 5 way scratch and have even tried giving her some dried cat food that I saw online. I have noticed when I move them to a place with more grass she doesn't seem to target the others as much. Where do I get the peck no more?

I have sold several chickens but I wouldn't say commercially. I think they just don't want any chicken houses in the city limits. I was told Cedartown and Polk County have ordinances per acre but I haven't researched it. I had 200-300 when I lived in Cedartown and I was in the county but never cared because nobody could see what I had unless they came to my house. Since I had 2 great danes and a Rotty, not many people came too close. If I had room to have 499 I would be on some animal hoarder show.

I got the peck no more at Hollands feed store over here, but they have it at TSC as well.

I did a search through the ordinances section of the Polk County website and there was nothing listed about chickens. Dogs, cats even ferrets, but nothing about chickens.

as for 'commercially' I think it would be more about how often you do it, as in are you set up as a business TO sell them, on a regular basis. Again, unless someone turned you in I have no idea how they'd ever know as long as you don't put up a sign. This is why I haven't put a sign up for eggs.

Something similar, for a few years I flipped campers, buy -- fix up -- sell for profit. When I first started doing it, I would go through the title process of having it changed to my name. I did 3 in just a couple months, and the lady at the tag office told me if I did 5 within any 12 month period, I would be considered a dealer and have to be set up in business.. .not chickens but the point is, this state can come off the wall completely on how they define 'commercial' or 'in business'

Very true. One of my friends at animal control mentioned the county having an ordinance and a cousin that owns a big farm in Collard Valley mentioned the county having one or planning to create one but I have never dug into it.

I go to Holland all the time. Went twice a week for all the years I had chickens, goats, and pigs in Cedartown.

I have learned that all governments can do anything they want. They just want their cut as if we don't pay enough taxes.
