YO GEORGIANS! :)

Very frustrated. Just finished my second hatch.
13 RIR and 2 Silkies made it to lock down.
6 hatched on their own, 2 I just had to help since they were stuck in one spot for over 24 hours. We will see if they survive, but they had totally absorbed the yolks, just were shrink wrapped.
5 others were "shrink wrapped" and dead. They pipped internally, then when they pipped out, the inner membrane tightened around them and they ended up dying.
My humidity was at least 70% the entire lockdown, sometimes spiking higher as chicks hatched and added their humidity. I did not open the incubator at all until this morning (day 24) The first 4 chicks hatched on day 21, and they were loud and hungry!
What can I do to solve this? My next eggs are my first purchased eggs. I really don't want to lose them due to something I can fix.
I'm using the Farm Innovators with fan and turner. My first batch was better than this one.

Hi y'all!

It's been a long time since I've posted, mostly because we're due in July! First trimester kicked my butt this go round. Life is going well! Lost another hen (my Barred Rock) thanks to a Cooper's Hawk. Then that same dang hawk followed my EE a few weeks later! We leave our garage door cracked for the cat, and when the EE ran from the hawk, she went right for the garage. Dang hawk followed her, and then couldn't figure out how to get out. The EE hid in a metal shoe rack, and I had a pretty big shock when I took recycling into the garage! That hawk hasn't been back after I chased it off, muttering obscenities under my breath. Of course the roo was hiding, like the useless jerk he is. He's gotten so bad going after people/kids I'm going to have to cull him. I just haven't had the heart to do it yet. He's so handsome, but now he's scaring the kids and is just being a big jerk. On the upside, I think he'll be tasty!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas!

Whatevs. You had already slipped up and told us it was "loading".. We all know you use dial up now.

And what kind of parent leaves boy children alone, at night, on a farm??

And oh. Cute chick.
the kind that still uses dial up internet. I wonder if it's because she likes hearing skaaaaa----REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-WOMP WOMP when it's first connecting.........

Hey y'all! Been a slacker in keeping up! Just saying hi. (ie. Procrastinating because I don't feel like going in to Newnan to do errands) LOL

All this talk of fancy dogs is killing me! I have wanted an Irish Wolfhound for almost 30 yrs. don't get me wrong, I love my 2 pits, but man I thought both would've croaked by now so I could finally have my dream dog. LOL
When the husband found out they run about $1800+, I got "the look". But, he hasn't said "we'll see..." Yet. That's usually husband code for NO. I'm trying to remain hopeful.

[/quot Have you been monitoring the air space in the eggs the whole time? If the air sac is too small at hatching, the chick will run out of air and drowns before it can pip out. If it is too big, the chick has no space to continue to grow and move around in the last day or so. It's such a balancing at during the whole process! I remember my first hatches. One was really bad and I felt like a murderer! You will get the hang of it and you will get use to your particular incubator. Just remember to keep records so you can work off your notes.

I hadn't monitored, honestly had only opened this one to add water. Was trying "less is more"
the ones that died all pipped out to where I was watching their little beaks, but then couldn't break through the membrane.
The two I helped today seem to be doing OK, I was worried at first, but will wait til they are totally dry to put them with the others.

isn't the general consensus to only candle on days 10 and 18? I get marking the air cell, though I'll need to read up some on what that means. I'm running the same bator, I have my water bottle adjusted to where the humidity is staying between 40 and 45%, which from the discussion several pages back according to some is about where I want this bator to be? I took out the vent plugs and have the dial adjusted so that the temp is staying an even 100, and the humidity is staying right there in that level. I'm only opening to add water.

I did an early candle last night because the kids came home with us after church and I wanted to let them see it. Had one quitter, blood ring was very easy to see. Man, even with a cree flashlight these blue AM eggs are hard to see through!

oh yeah, flower, I started a journal and make sure to make notes in it all the time to be able to keep up with it for next time

Well Bummer! The PO has lost my chicks! They were shipped out of OH late Tuesday night. Arrived at the Atlanta PO at 1am today and shipped out to Ellijay at 6am! Nobody knows where they are! Ellijay PO said they should have been there by now. Said they are not scheduled to receive any more shipments from ATL PO today. They have no other info on where the chicks are! If these chicks were hatched on Monday and have been in 'process' since then, they are going on 4 days now! Hopefully they were hatched on Tuesday! Poor babies. I hope they are still alive!
