Agreed that car accidents are rough. Please take good care of yourself and realize that physical therapy depending on your doc's recommendation may be needed to. Our farm is continuing in its downsizing of livestock so that both Hubby and I can spend less money and time of livestock management and care and more on the bakery, cannery, honey, fruit and plants and veggies. My chronic respiratory problems are not improving and I know that animal care is one of the most dangerous things I can do as I have gotten repetitive fungal diseases from working with them (but I tell the doctor, this is also in the air we breathe as farmers.) It is a hard decision and one that takes such careful management and selection of who to entrust our animals to. We have only a few more bunnies and one rabbit to place, about 20 more birds - mostly marans (Blue, Black and Wheaten (altho I think those are spoken for) and then about 1/2 of our chinese geese which would be about 8 and some of our dairy goats and young babies and one adolescent. We have been doing it slowly and gradually and carefully to assure they are going to good homes. but although I KNOW it's the right thing to do for health reasons and time and financial reasons, a lump in my throat comes up every time after they are gone, as I remember them being born here and all the times we have had together and hope the new owners will continue to Love them and Care for them as we do... Farming by sissies is a bad thing...LOL.....On the happy side, the strawberries are coming in like gang busters, we are picking around 6 to 8 strawberry flats a day!!!!!!!!!!!! Need strawberries .....We have plenty.......Just message me!

the greAt chicken move is done and house put together thanks to becky! chickens back to laying.
Congrats Buddy! I know that must of been a big job.

here is a video of her. she is hobbled and seperated because of splayed leg. i still don't think she is eating. i have seen her drink on her own. she cries like this near constantly
If a chick is like this you need to hand feed it by making a wet mash out of your starter and put some in it's mouth. Also, splayed leg can be corrected by placing a band-aid in between it's legs. One sticky side aound one leg and one sticky side around the other and only the width of the gauzed area between the two legs should be showing. They usually are fine in 5 days. Hope it helps.

Does anyone know of any chickenstocks or shows in ga this year would like to go to one thanks
Chicken shows are in the fall and winter months because that is usually when they are not molting or laying much. During the spring and summer months everyone is just too busy laying eggs. There are shows in Dalton, GA Fair Grounds, Calhoun, and various other places. The best thing to do is google Georgia Poultry Shows and you will get a wealth of info. Make sure your flock is NPIP tested before the show as it is required. Contact the GA Dept. of Agriculture and they will get you to the right people. It is very reasonable and THEY COME TO YOU!!! I had 25 tested and it cost me $13.65 and the test is good for a year and will allow me to show in any state.

trion Georgia north of rome south of tn west of Dalton one stop light and ya miss the whole town but we do have a walmart go figure

Hello from LaGrange. I've got 25 city chickens in my front yard at the moment. They get rotated around my small yard at different times of the year. I've got a mixture of RIR, Delaware, BA, EE, NHR, and a couple of Lakenvelders. One rooster. I've had them for almost 2 years. I'm really interested in maybe trading eggs for hatching so I can get a few different kinds at some point this summer the next time one of my girls goes broody. My roo is a NHR. He's a sweet guy named Rusty. I hatched out a few batches with the help of a couple of my hens last year when I had a Golden Polish Roo, too. So I have one girl who lays blue eggs and is a mix of my girl in the picture here and the Golden Polish. I also have a hen who lays an olive colored egg from the mix between an EE and Rusty. I call them EEs even though when I bought them (from a major supplier) as chicks I was told they were Araucanas. It's always live and learn with chickens. I'm very interested in getting a few Blue Wheaten Araucanas eggs or maybe even older ones depending on the situation. It's just a thought for when one of the hens goes broody again later in June.

and Welcome to the YO GEORGIANS! Group. I have Silkies and Bantam Polish.

Anyone know of a reasonable and good vet in or around Waycross Ga? I need one for goats and poultry. Thanks
So reasonable is not in the name of a vet, LOL.

I can't help you with the goats but...There is an online poultry vet named Dr. Peter Brown who is in MD but, he is on the Chicken Whisperer Radio Broadcast on Monday's and he will help you by phone or online for a $25 charge and he can ship out asap any meds he thinks your poultry needs. He has been a Godsend to me and has called me personally to talk about my chicken's health. Here is his website www.firststatevetsupply.com. He has an emergency kit for $25 that EVERYONE should own. It basically has everything you would need to get you by until you can procure a large quantity of antibiotics, worming meds, electrolytes, probiotics, etc. WELL worth it. This is just my 2 cents worth here,

In a tragic incident, we had a coop fire last week. We lost all our chickens, which were abut 5 weeks old. My daughter was particularly attached to her spitzhaben. We drove to a feed store and bought a new group. We managed to create a distraction so the kids are not so freaked out but my daughter is heartbroken and really wants a spitzhaben like the one she had. We can't find one that is under 3 weeks old. I Googled and could not find one that I could get anytime soon. We live in Atlanta and would drive anywhere within a few hours of here or pay extra to get a day old shipped. We just need 1 but would be glad to pay to have 5 shipped, if there is a minimum order, and just find homes for the others. We are trying to get one this week.
That breaks my heart and I'm so sorry. I wish I had a spitzhaben for you but I only breed Silkies and Bantam Polish. May I ask how the fire started so maybe we can all learn from it? Was it the heating lamp?

Well everything hatched but my silkies
sad.png
I can't get silkie eggs to hatch for nothing this is the third batch I have ordered and none hatched. All other babies are hatching so I know its not the incubator. Anyone find that silkies are not as hardy when shiped.
I have three silkie chicks (1-white, 2-that are brownish/red and slightly frizzled) that are 5 weeks old for sale (pet quality, no defects, 5 toes, etc $5) I also have 40 eggs due to hatch in 7-10 days. Soon our new coop will be finished and we will have breeder/show quality silkies and polish for sale. Can't wait. I have Catdance line and my porcelain girl has taken BV, RV, and ReserveAOFL. She is a star!

I'm in GA, the atlanta area specifically, but my chickens are in West Point, GA. I'd love to meet some people that are metro chicken owners though!
Breanna to the group! I live an hour east of ATL. I live on 2 acres so not quite the metro chicken farmer. If there is anything I can help you with please feel free to PM me. Hopefully you'll get to reunite with your chickens and have them with you. I do know someone in ATL that has Silkies and Cochins and that is Darrin Wegg. He is a member of BYC so you may want to look him up. Nice guy.

Heya Georgians!

I am new to the area, and am getting my run set up for my Ladies.

I haven't had a lawn in years (was in the desert), and definitely not here where lawns have lots of nasties in them. I've been told I need to use an insecticide on the lawn now because of the ticks, chiggers, etc, but I'm afraid to use that stuff on my lawn because of the chickens.

Their run is unfortunately in a lower part of the yard, so when water collects, as it has been with all of this rain, it will end up there. So I'm worried about nasty chemicals ending up in their run, or about them eating bugs that have got the chemical on them.

My question is, what do you all do about lawns and insects? Do you just not worry about it, or have something else you use that won't harm chickens? They are pets, so I don't want them getting sick. We also eat their eggs, so we don't want to get sick either!

I'm in the process of adding soil to the run to try and prevent the pooling of water, but right now it's just a nasty mud pile. UGH. I hope the grass seed takes before my chickens get here...
You made it! The desert rat is now a Georgian! From one rat to another, tee hee.

You don't need to use insecticides if you can let your flock free range under supervision, unless your property is properly fenced and you have no hawks, which is usually never. I just lost to babies to a hawk attack, they were in a pen but only partially closed on top. That won't happen again. First time in a year. I use river sand for my coops and run. It is easy to clean up with a rake, provides them the grit they need, and they can dust bathe in it. I've heard not to use "play" sand because of the silica in it. I hope you are all settled in and in time you will love living here because of the seasons and the beauty of all the green. I still love AZ, don't get me wrong...it's a different kind of beauty there.

Just posting a bright picture of my two young girls on this gloomy day.
How pretty! The flowers are such a nice touch.

I think she meant are you sure all viable eggs are finished.
Wasn't ignoring you just haven't been on in a while. Still handling my mom's estate and had to fly out to AZ for a couple of weeks. Busy here with the gardens and the chickens. Building a new coop for MORE SILKIES and POLISH, yeah! Breeding for show quality hopefully. Now I have new eggs, 40+ that will hatch in 7-10 days. Hahaha everything is a poppin'!

I'm in Wilmington Island, GA. I need 2 more chickens. Anyone know where I can get them? I have one lonely little 6wk old and a brand new coop! Never knew it would be hard to find them!

We made it here about 2 weeks ago now. 2200 miles with 21 chickens (split between 17 pet carriers), 2 parrotlets, my DH and I all crammed into a suburban. It was an adventure, needless to say!

What's amazing is that the Ladies (and our two Serama roos) didn't really seem all that upset, despite being kenneled for 36 hours solid. I think it was because they could see us (they were right behind the driver/passenger seat). It didn't smell great in there, that's for sure, even with a change-over halfway through....

They kept laying eggs, even, and still haven't stopped. I figured the move would stress them out but I think the change to milder weather (at least not 110-116), that green stuff called GRASS and actual DIRT to roll around in has really lifted their spirits.

Now with the mud bog going on after all of this rain....we may have a different story. We will probably have to get sand!!
