YO GEORGIANS! :)

Female hens turning into males can happen but is varyy rare. But males can't turn into females.

I think it happens when a hen has something wrong with her parts but I don't think the rooster hen is ever fertile.
I only heard about Rooster hens a while back on the BBC

After I looked into it, you're correct. So, it's probably just a dominance thing. They still haven't taken to Betty much.

Ok, question. Can a chicken be male and female? I have noticed red spots on the yolks in some eggs and today I saw my one RIR hen, whose laying again, mount my Black Star who should be laying any time now since her incident. The RIR was literally mating her. I don't have a rooster and always just attributed the red spots to previous roosters. They were brown for a while and then started turning more red.

This is what my understanding is so far:

Blood or dark spots in the egg can happen with or without a rooster around. I've had it happen mostly in my hens that lay dark pigmented eggs, but sometimes in my other lighter eggs as well. I think it's just a thing that happens sometimes.
Unless an egg is fertile and has been incubating for 3+ days, any blood or spots you see is not from a fetus, it's the hen's.

Hi fellow Georgians. Doesn't look like anyone has posted here in several years.
Well, I have a problem....I have this HUGE amount of egg cartons and would love to give them to someone fairly close to me. I'm in SW Ga....not too far from Albany, Valdosta or Tifton. And I even know my way to Nashville if that young lady should show up!

Guess I didn't go past the first page! Duh!!! So there are recent posts here, good!

Agree w/ this - I just saw the same thing the other day from one of my hens - Just showing she is in charge (after we turned our latest rooster into a pot of soup :)). Also on the blood spots - definitely from the hen, not a fetus. They just get in there sometimes.

@choonook - how is the flock / egg production coming along? We drove past your house last week and thought of you guys.

a bit of a surprise too to get hatched out chicks in Januaury.
But then it is south GA and we seem to be done with our one weekend of winter...

Morning Georgiachick86,

I live in a small town called Woodbury; due West from where you are, I think,  I'm just trying to meet the other "Chicken-People" in this part of the State.
I have Welsummers and Welbars .  I live way out in the country and would like to hear more about your chickens when you have time.
