YO GEORGIANS! :)

Agree w/ this - I just saw the same thing the other day from one of my hens - Just showing she is in charge (after we turned our latest rooster into a pot of soup :)).  Also on the blood spots - definitely from the hen, not a fetus.  They just get in there sometimes.

@choonook
 - how is the flock / egg production coming along?  We drove past your house last week and thought of you guys.

The Maran crosses are AWESOME! They lay large/jumbo eggs, are pretty sweet and good foragers. Not sure we'll be keeping the Welsummer cross, she's a pain and lays medium eggs, a lot of them though. Not sure on the Black Star, but she's our favorite as far as personality. All the layers produce 6 eggs a week in the prime season and about 3-4 in the winter after they get past molting. So, outside of Sassy, I highly recommend the crosses!

Hello!

Our mixes our some of our best layers too! My wellsummer/ccl mixes have been laying right into the winter, even though this will be thief second year with us. Most of the purebreds have quit.

It's definitely good to have cool weather birds to carry you through the molt of the warmer weather ones! Think I might be going for Australorps next...kinda even out the red/black bird ratio.

I think this will be the year we don't intentionally obtain any more birds (yeah, right.... I know I'm going to be weak and end up with another 'keeper' at some point...) but we've got too many black birds in my opinion. Almost half the flock is solid black or black alterered with another gene. I'm going to have to select our next generation very carefully unless I want an all black flock!
