Iwiese58- Hey! I'm in Cochran. I started off using pine chips but they're just a mess to clean up. Hay seems to work better for me. It's so funny to watch the girls search for the "perfect" nest box. When they find it, they are able to shape the nests just like the want them. Some of them kick all the hay out and others spin around one way and turn around and spin the other way like my dog does when she finds her perfect nap spot. I also put some DE in the hay to help with any bugs. It's much easier to clean up. Sorry this didn't come out as a quote and reply. My new iPad hasn't learned how to do that yet;)

Anybody besides me getting pounded with rain? My runs are so muddy right now. I raked them and cleaned out some of the muck yesterday so my chickens wouldn't be standing in it this morning. I put down a bale of straw. They didn't even get to enjoy it long. After hours of working to get them where they could have dry or drier feet, it rained agin last night. This morning, I fluffed the wet straw thinking that it would dry some in the morning sun and breeze. Well, it wasn't fast enough so, I spent a couple more hours removing sopping wet straw and spreading more clean dry straw. Guess what? I just finished raining over two inches more at my house. So now, my runs are right back where they started. I have searched on here for something to do to help the situation. I need a quick fix for now. I can do something more major when it dries out around here. But for now, we are scheduled for more rain this weekend and all of next week. Please don't think I'm complaining about the rain, because I'm not. I thank God that HE has blessed us with it. We had wells going dry left and right around here. I'm just concerned for the health of my chickens. Anybody have any suggestions. We don't eat them-they are strictly for pets and eggs so, their health is very important to me.
 
ChickSter99, we have had tons of rain, too. Built our first coop this spring and would have done a couple things differently had we known to anticipate this issue. A few weeks ago ran into mites as a result of them hatching out of the wet sand in the run, at least from what we've been told. It is frustrating, I know. All I know to do is just deal with each day the best I can and hope/pray for the best.

It is so frustrating. We didn't use sand when we built ours last summer. I've been contemplating putting it in the runs later. I've always used straw and always did a thorough cleaning when they beat it all down. I never did like just adding and adding to it. I keep DE and 7 dust in my coops and runs (around them, under them). I do have spiders in there though. This wetness that they have to walk in is driving me insane. Wish I could add pictures (emoticons) from my iPad. I would add the one screaming. Lol. Not screaming LOL but screaming like their going crazy.
