YO GEORGIANS! :)

Hi GA folks!! I'm brand new to byc, and I already need help. I was given 2 chicks in early November when they were less than 2 months old and both supposedly hens. Well, there's been crowing since December and I'll have to find a new home for my rooster. Any guidance will be greatly appreciated.

That leaves me a) looking to get 3 - 4 chicks/hens, and b) wondering if I should get freshly hatched or hens the same age as the one I already have, and c) does it matter if they're all the same breed or can I have different breeds together?

Lol. Hope he's planning on getting one soon. That's funny he got the eggs before the incubator.

I haven't ever sold any chicks, just started birds or grown ones I decided not to keep. I've been letting my showgirl and silkie raise the babies, so I feel bad taking them away. Plus it seems people like the started ones anyway, especially if you can tell if they are male or female.

How old are the chicks before you can tell if they're male or female? I'm looking to adding a few more, but I can't have males and I want to avoid having to find a new home for one.

1) Welcome!!
2) It's super hard to sell a rooster unless you have something really special. You can give them away on craigslist or cook them up for dinner.
3) I think a few people on here have chicks/pullets for sale.
4) Started pullets are easier on you and they'll be able to mingle with your other girl sooner. Plus no confusion on gender.
5) Nope, mix away. It's better if you stick with large breed in one pen and small breed in another pen, but other than that, they don't care what breed the other chickens are. They just care it's a chicken.

Depends on the breed. Some are easier to tell than others. There's sex linked ones that you can tell at hatch by their down color. Barred rocks are easy to tell once they start getting their barring in. Others, probably by 8 weeks you can tell. Big red combs = cockerel. (In general)

Thanks. I hate the idea of losing my two, but both are behaving like roosters. One is flat out crowing and the other is aggressive and trying to crow. They hatched September 13th and my friend was told they were both female when she got them.

Excellent!!! Thank you!!!

Roosters develop their combs very early. They have saddle feathers and hackle feathers that are pointy and iridescent. I have many many breeds all living together! I love that I have variety. You can tell one from the other! I would think it was sad to have all my chickens look alike! Plus, you can get chickens that lay all different colored eggs!
