I have a RIR that seems small and isnt laying. Her only egg was a little round one! What's up with her? She is awfully chatty when I come to steal off with the other hens eggs though.. Anything I can do to help her out?

So you are actually saying you can candle an egg right after it is laid and see that it is fertile? What do you see when you candle the egg that tells you it is fertile? Just asking.

that's what I want to know. What am I looking for? I have to take my eggs to a neighbor for incubation, so I want to know how to choose fertile eggs...

if it's infertile the light comes straight through, if its fertile it kind of "glows". Brown eggs are hard to tell though.
 
ok, so no books I have ever read on chickens and incubation, and that is quite a few, say you can tell an egg is fertile as soon as it is hatched. (by candling). The only way to know if your egg is fertile is to crack it open and look for the "bulls-eye" around the little white dot. Once a rooster has sex with a hen, the sperm can last for 2 weeks. So, if you crack open an egg from a particular hen and see that it is fertile, you can use her eggs.....they should be fertile for a time. It does depend on when that rooster got to her, but that is the way most people check for fertility. You will also know if your eggs are fertile if you put them in an incubator and check after 4 days....even then will be hard. Most people wait to candle their incubated eggs after the 7th day....I wait until day 10 so I can be sure they are fertile.
