YO GEORGIANS! :)

Could you make just one sheltered corner for them to use if they want? Even if it's out of cinder blocks and cardboard or something like that?

Well, I bought the hay last night and spread it out. And I used extension cords to run a single flood light to each roost. I will turn them on only tomorrow night & maybe Tuesday night, when temps will be hovering near zero.

Oh, and I had a big accident today when putting vaseline on my roosters combs. I had to catch them, and one rooster broke one of his spurs in the process. Poor baby. He had all the hens tending to his booboo. And then he scraped his comb in the dirt till he about got all the vaseline off. SMH.

I didn't add, for my hens I've decided not to change too much. Their coop is solid sides aside from about the top 18" (chicken wire).. One side is flush against a building, one has the chicken wire closed in with wood from when we relocated it. The two sides that are still open air are protected, I feel like, because the run itself on those two sides is enclosed with metal roofing on the TOP half.. If that makes sense.

And the wind is blowing on the side that is solid.

I will keep an eye on them and adjust as I need to. Didn't want to tarp it all and make it humid.

You can go to Walmart or Lowes or Home Depot and get a roll of painters tarp very cheaply. It is about 25 feet long and 3 feet wide. Just staple it to the side of your coop/run. If you can't do the whole thing, maybe just a strip either at the level of your roosts, or around the bottom so they have a place to keep out of the wind. It makes a HUGE difference! I can walk in the run from outside, and really tell the difference.

On a sad note, I left my chickens in the hands of my DH while I traveled to take care of my Mom in AL>> He called to say he forgot to turn off the electric fence and one of my favorite chickens got zapped to death! Ugh. I am so sick that it was that particular chicken. She was a mix between a cochin and an EE/ She had those cute feathered feet and such a cute little beard! She was too young to lay eggs yet, but she was getting close and she was so sweet. One of those friendly chickens. She was so black with that Jade green sheen on her when she was in the sun! My DH feels really terrible about it. I told him he had to click the off button several times to make sure the fence is off.

So I was looking at photos of my chickens, and like every other picture was of a chicken that has died! Hawk, Hawk, bear, bear, sour crop, bear, ??, electric fence, etc! Do you guys lose chickens? The one bear attack killed 6 chickens in one night! (That's why the electric fence). I do have to say, this is the reason I tell my husband that I have so many chickens and babies....because you never know when you are going to lose them.

I think I would like to get another Silkie. Would also like to have a Welsummer, a Blue Laced Red Wyandotte, a Speckled Sussex, and a Silver Laced Cochin. Maybe even a Silver Laced Polish. Love the laced look!

Oh nooo I'm so sorry!! :( It sucks losing babies, I know.. Especially when they're your favorite- that extra jab, I have not yet had to deal with.
