YO GEORGIANS! :)

Do we have any eggs that we know of that were laid during the Polar Vortex, that are developing? Anyone?

I completely forgot to mark the date on most of my eggs (not that it matters, I don't stop turning them, nor bother with a lockdown), and I can't remember which ones may have been laid during that time.

I just think it would be neat to have a chick who's egg was laid during that time, and to name him "polar" or "polar bear" for kicks, lol!

I have a few in the bator now, I'll let ya know Friday if they're developing. I'm going to try not to candle til then....but it's so tempting, especially since I hand turn the eggs.

I have some chicks that hatched right after the Polar Vortex. The hen stayed on them the entire time & didn't move until for two days. I wrapped a towel around her and gave her food & water right where she was setting. She had stubbornly decided to brood her eggs right next to the coop door. I was pleasantly surprised when they hatched.

Adorable! How many did she hatch?

Out of 28 hens, not even 1 has tried to go broody. I've got plans to take a dozen eggs to a neighbor in about a month for incubation. I can't wait!

10 out of 13 eggs. "Sweetie Pie" is a good little broody hen. Now that the chicks have hatched, another hen "Sassie" will step in & help her. Sassie doesn't set, but she's an excellent "aunty".

Adorable! Question: are they in with other chickens? Or are they separated? Just curious. I'm familiar with the term "mother hen" lol as far as being protective but wasn't sure what the usual practice is.

One roo 4 hens. Since this picture was taken the white hen on the far left " disappeared" through a hole fresh torn in the coop. We suspect a raccoon, as marauding possums tend to kill in coop. The little one is the hen that just hatched the peeps. You can see Aunty Sassie to the right and the roo is Shaun, proud father. Unlike TV, my question is "who is Babby Mommy". I also have 2 older hens, Sable & Shirley.

They are all together in one coop, and lay all their eggs in one place. Sweeties Pie is the broody, she has made it her place in life to set eggs. Sassie likes to help when there are peeps. When they were younger, Sable & Shirley would set eggs, and hatched one. Now they have a couple of young ones to do the hard stuff, and enjoy life like 5 year old hens should.

They are all together in the same coop. It's easier when the little ones grow up with the big ones, they're accepted as flock members at an early age. I've introduced new chickens into an existing flock and it is a hassle. Hens fight just like roos when their space is invaded.
