I wanted to share this worm website I found with you all. I don't just raise chickens, I have box turtles, a couple of garter snakes, a salamander, some bull frogs, and broad headed skinks. But they ALL love eating earth worms, including the chickens.

Yesterday I came across a website that sells earth worms (night crawlers, reds, etc.) in bulk. It's mostly meant for composting, but obviously I use them for animal food. I wrote the guy an email to basically say "thanks for existing... I needed a good worm supplier and glad I found your site!"

The response I got back was kinda heart-wrenching, and it's something ALL of us are experiencing right now. He said that "was the good news he needed to hear on a day when he just felt like throwing in the towel." Apparently he has chickens as well, and they have ALSO stopped laying with this cold weather. The worms are struggling with the cold, and he also has bees which have been dying off in the cold. So this cold snap is literally killing his business. And I'm sure that still being a "young" business doesn't help him either.

That being said, I'm just starting a new job, so it'll be a couple of months until I can start being a regular of his, and buying in bulk. But I do plan on it. And I'd like to steer anyone else that I possibly can, into his direction as well. He's right here in Georgia (Dawsonville) and according to the website, he built his business more on honesty, education, and quality, rather than profit alone. One of his pages even says "free Vermi-composting course with every purchase," because he wants to make sure others are informed. So this is one of those VERY rare occasions that I really feel a business is WORTH sharing and WORTH supporting (seriously, I rarely do recommendations). So please take a look, and if you are looking for fishing bait, compost worms, or just an occasional box of chicken treats, contact him!

LTygress, I don't know where you are in Georgia. There is a guy East of Byron on Houston Rd on the south side of Echeeconee creek near the intersection of Us 41, Hwy 49 and Houston Rd. He has lots of worms and worm castings. He has always explained jow to take care of them and he even have me a bag of manure for them. I bought a large kitty litter bucketful of worms from him. Still too far north for that too, probably. I'm in Jackson, JUST above the 478 area code line. This area is considered the very last part of Metro Atlanta. The gas to go into Macon area, or up into Atlanta area, is usually worse than just paying for shipping.

I MIGHT HAVE A LARGE-FOWL BROODY HEN!!!

I just went outside to gather the last of the eggs for today in hopes of finally filling the order for this guy who wants hatching eggs. I got three of them from the one nest box that everyone uses... but there was a hen on top of them! It's pitch black out, but she's not roosting with the rest of them, she's down in the nest box sitting on eggs! She's an easter egger, so I'll lose out on those extra eggs for hatching, but she's fricking large fowl! I might have me an extra incubator for a bit!

I'll know for sure if she stays on them tomorrow, and sleeps on them again tomorrow night. I'm so excited about this, though!

I remember now that you are from Jackson. Yes, actually for a lot of things it is cheaper for me to order than to drive to Macon especially since I would waste at least a half a day just going to get them. The UPS and FEDEX drivers know us well.

Of course Jackson isn't too far to go to get Fresh Aire barbeque.
