YO GEORGIANS! :)

Was picking up some chick feed today and noticed two stacks of pallets. Unfortunately the store owner's son didn't know what she sells them for so going back tomorrow for rubber boots. Would have gotten the boots and feed when she was there earlie but freaked out when my bank card was declined. Apparently if you use a card at Chevron they can hold between one and three hundred dollars on top of your purchase. Hopefully I will get my $126 they are holding back tomorrow if not then Monday.

I have a question regarding critter proofing my run. I have a 4x6 hen coop Im building and intend on make the run come right off of to the right. The run part will be about 6x8is and tall enough for my 6'10 1/2" hubby to walk around in with out hitting his head (hate that when it happens). I'm using hardware cloth as my wire to cover all of the sides and straight across the top (I have hawks, owls etc). My question is about the ground. I've seen completely covered ground area, open ground with the wire sunk in around the perimeter etc. Which is the best to avoid diggers?
.

This is what we did after losing two chickens to stray dogs, (my run is 8x8 and about 11 feet tall). I ran the hardware mesh 18 inches into the ground, backfilled and planted creeping juniper. We used face boards when we built the frame plus wrapped the hardware mesh around the corner posts and used rivets instead of staples. That way the wire and fasteners are sandwiched between the boards and can't be pulled loose. As another safety, we put heavy duty latches in the trap door to the run and they chickens get locked in at dusk. Also, a diving hawk or owl can make short work of a wire ceiling so we invested in corrugated metal roofing. Additionally, I bought 4 $10 solar spot lights at walmart. They do a good job of lighting the area for several hours at night. I regularly have foxes, Bob cats, coyotes and dogs on the property. According to my game cameras, they a void the coop area.

Just had a run in with a hawk myself! Heard my girl making some very loud noises. Went to see and a huge hawk was sitting on top of her pen trying to get at her! He even bent the wire a bit. Luckily no one was hurt. Whew. My heart sank when I realized what could be potentially happening!
had a friend who had her parrot on its perch in a screened in porch. Hawk flew through the screen and grabbed the bird off the perch. No joke. And she was in the suburbs.

I have those long wavy panels overlapping my coop so nothing can get in, not even the rain lol. I've heard too many horror stories about predators coming thru the top so mine is a bit like ft know. ;-)

I'm in the suburbs too.lol. We only have two silkies that are really just pets so they come inside during the night and when we aren't around. We have too many hawks to let em free range unless I am hovering over them!! Guess I need to make our outside pen a tad stronger thou!

Okay so I'm kinda of glad I have not gotten to the run yet. Sounds like I need to change up my idea of running framed sections of hardware wire for the roof cover. I know this is probably a silly question but if you use the wavy stuff how do you fill in the wave gaps from critters?
