YO GEORGIANS! :)

Somebody turn on the ac lol.
It's actually not too bad today up in my neck of the woods. Hot, but humidity is down, which is nice! I hear it's supposed to be in the 80's up in NWGA next week, according to the Weather Channel, but I also hear it's supposed to reach 130 in some parts of the midwest this weekend. That's dangerously hot! Weather just gets crazier every year...

Thanks, GAFarmGirl87! I appreciate the photo...is that like the stuff you sometimes see outside floor mats made of? I did put some sheets of the rubber(?) bumpy stuff with holes in it that is used to line kitchen drawers with in hopes of softening the eggs' landings. It was an old roll that no longer had the packaging so I can't say what it's called.
Are their combs fully developed before they begin to lay?

Question...When adding to an flock how do you manage the different food requirements for the different ages? I have a couple EE that will need to go on layer food while the latest additions will need chick food. Do I set out both types, will they go for the type the need?

In the last month I've had 4 hens go broody. Since I had plenty of eggs I decided to let them set just to see how it goes. The first one killed all 6 of her chicks as they hatched. I'd check the eggs and could not see any pips or zips. Then I'm come back a few hours later to find a dead chick. I don't have access to an incubator so I couldn't take the eggs from her to finish them out. She's been tagged and noted for next year. Two other hens were a week behind #1 and the first two hatched today. This one is a much better momma. I've got Barred Rock, EE and Red Sex Link hens and Barred Rock, Ameracauna and Black Cochin roosters. So the mix will be interesting to see.

I have sex links which are like dogs, they are so friendly n funny. I have one Rhode island who is 6.5 mos old and hadn't laid an egg yet and 2 barred rocks that started laying about 4 weeks ago. One has already gone quite broody n she's very testy when we collect the eggs lol. I don't have any roosters so I don't know why she went broody so early. Anyone have any answers? Other than that they are really great hens.
