YO GEORGIANS! :)

Anxious to get home this afternoon.. I put some hot water in the coop this AM and hung it from the corner of the roost bar.. lowered the heat light several inches in hopes of keeping it warm enough not to freeze today but I just HATE leaving things plugged in when I'm away from home. :/

Even with the sub arctic temps 4 of my hens are still laying! And no one has frostbite! Yay for heat lamps! But, all my waters are frozen solid and one of the rabbit waters exploded. My fault I over filled that one.

The chickens all seem to be making it in this cold. It was 6°F this morning when I looked at the thermometer. Much warmer than other places but as cold as I've seen it here in over 20 years. I'm so glad we are getting these very cold temperatures actually. We've had such mild winters for years and we needed to kill back a few of the bugs. The bright side is it will be ten times warmer in a few days. It's the reason I came here to visit and never left.

Amen to that. We're going to be very thankful for this cold spell come spring-time. We were long overdue for an actual winter.

Yes, my girls surprised me with 10 eggs yesterday! Granted, one of them laid it from the roost & it landed in poo, which ironically kept it from busting, lol. I have 28 hens, and on average I get 8 eggs per day. I didn't even run the bulb until last night! I'll be turning it on again tonight though, since it's supposed to be 10 degrees.

I was also very pleasantly surprised yesterday.. Two eggs.. Out of four laying, that's about my breathe anyway. Some days 3, have yet to get 4 but I have my suspicions my BO isn't laying yet anyway..

My four ladies have not left their coop since Sunday night, they are having none of this. Yesterday after work I had to go put some food in their coop for worry that they'd starve themselves! It looks like I may have to give them more tonight, because they're still roosting!

Out of 24 laying hens I am getting about 7-8 eggs a day. I've got a few that are molting, too. I think there are only about 9 hens laying right now. This is the first winter since my originals starting laying that they have taken a break. They are two and a half years old. They laid all through last winter.

I am visiting in AL, but here are some photos my DH sent from NW GA.

Frozen duck egg. She always lays them way early in the AM. By the time my DH went to collect eggs, it had already frozen.

We are getting 8-14 eggs from 19 hens... I also have some molting and one crazy hen that won't stop being broody! So, we are good here on the eggs.
