YO GEORGIANS! :)

Welcome to BYC. This is a very helpful, entertaining group here. There is a person in Macon that has some silkies etc. I see them posting on here occasionally and I believe on Craigs list.

Welcome! I'm in Henry with Silkies and Buff Orpingtons, but we just had a dog/incubator incident so no chicks as of right now, but I'm collecting eggs to set. I should have some Silkies in the next month or so if all goes well.

I have a question. What is "down in the hocks"? My Marilyn can't stand up. Her legs are strong enough to move her around (mostly on her head) but that's all. She has an appetite some days, some days not. I just want her to get better or pass in her sleep. It makes me so sad to see her sick.

I read about this "down in the hocks" in a few old chicken books. It is an old time saying. It referred to a condition where a chicken would become lame and literally go "down on it's hocks".. It was believed to be caused by poor nutrition in the parent birds. The chick would grow for about 3-4 months and then the bones in that chick could no longer support the chicken because of a defect caused by the poor nutrition.

@Flowerbh: well I found her down one day in a pile of poo. Almost a month now she hasn't been able to stand. I have treated her for malnutrition, worms and mites. She hasn't improved at all. Her quality of life stinks and I feel so bad for her. She sleeps a lot doesn't eat or drink very well. So I am going to put her to sleep tomorrow. No other chicken is sick! She has always been small and never laid. :(

Getting so close! IF weather holds out, and we have enough time in the evenings, I'd say it'll be ready for the kiddos by the weekend!

Left to do: Finish trim staining inside run, trim/stain the eave areas, make ladder to coop door, make/place laying boxes, Hang front and back door, and figure out/get the roost bar in the coop. I also want to mount some bamboo poles in the roost area (we have bamboo running out our EARS :( )but that's not a must-have to move the birds. :)
