YO GEORGIANS! :)

just catching up on reading, but not from as far back as Roboduck!

Anyhow, LTygress - turkey prices are easy; just think of "more than you wanted to pay", and add some more :p. My first pair cost me almost $100, and they were inexpensive because they were ex 4-H projects and the kids needed room for new birds. Then I paid more than that for the next hen and some poults from an organic farm. I just sold the last jake from that batch, and he was sale priced. I would have a bigger flock if they weren't so expensive! I don't think my husband knows how much i actually paid for those goofy birds, even now. He did hear the conversation when I was trying to decide how many poults to get, though:
Me: "I'd like 4 please"
Her: "Ok, then you should get 6 or even 8. Turkeys are really good at killing themselves as poults."
Me: "well, that's not exactly encouraging"

In the end, I only wound up with two that survived to day 3 after hatch form that batch, but that's because we let mom keep them and try to raise them. I don't recommend that approach.

Lol, gotcha. Turkeys seem like a major pain in the a**.

Well, I woke up this morning to another leghorn-mix hatch. That's good because I just got payment yesterday for two full dozen of them "whenever they are ready". Hehe, yikes.

The third incubator just took the place of the first, and I took the first one down for cleaning. It'll go into the dishwasher after work today, and then sprayed down with a bleach solution until it dries. Then I'll bring it back up and take the brand new one down for cleaning (the whole new design thing) in preparation for GOOSE EGGS! I still can't believe incubator #1 is doing so well after a full year and a half in constant use! I guess even the old-style LGs aren't all that UNreliable, as long as they were taken care of. And when it's all you've got, you take care of it, lol!

But I'm glad I have three so I can switch them out for cleaning now, too. The one I just took down had a rotten egg in it during the last few days. It didn't explode, but the smell got absorbed, so it needs to be cleaned pretty bad!

But for now, I'm off to work! I'll be at abmaddox's post office the next few days for work, so I may know when her ameraucana eggs arrive! Too bad it's not CHICKS, or I'd know the moment they walked in the door! lol!

Maybe you could sprinkle the smelly one with baking soda after cleaning and let that sit for a day or so, then rinse one final time. LOVE that stuff. :)

Morning! :caf Wanted to take a walk this morning, but it sure is dark outside...

I had no idea turkeys were so expensive!!

I'll be checking out TSC this weekend to see what chicks they have. I'd much rather buy from a local farm though. Has anyone here ever bought chicks from the little poultry farm in adairsville? Can't remember the name. I always see an ad on cl, but I haven't gone to check them out yet.

Usually I find poults for $15 on CL. But they're usually bronze crosses. I'm gonna be stalking our TSC to see what's in the offering.

Finally got through from about pg 780. Kids been using the computer, and my tablet is so irritating to use with this site.
I want chicks!!!!!! So wish I had another brooder, I wouldve bought some dominiques yesterday at the feed store but no where to put them just yet! When there is a will there is a way LOL!

Lol! I'm having the same issue. Well, I was. I have a chicken tractor we originally built for my silkies but when the gross weather rolled in they got moved into a pen I had reserved for more large fowl. So, I blocked off the gaps in the tractor and put my NYD hatch babies in there and in about a week the 18 in the brooder will be put in there as well to make room for whatever I hatch as well as what I get from TSC. Redneck ingenuity all the way! Lol.

Yes, I'm not overly fond of the mobile version of this site. It's too restricted. Plus I had to write down all the shortcuts for smilies :gig

I'm hoping to get my hands on some dominiques also, after reading about the breed. Hardy, economical, and dual purpose. What's not to like?

Redneck and proud of it LOL! It won't be long and I'll be able to put the chicks I have outside in our small pen, they are almost feathered out. We have a heat lamp we are gonna put in with them.

These are the babies I have that need to go outside. The are blue and black copper marans, when I bought them they were already halfway feathered out.
