YO GEORGIANS! :)

Dang! miss a day and lookie what happens lol I had a terrible water leak hiding under the house!! WSA said we were using over 22000 gallons a month again this month. Wholly shazbot! Had the $$ to call the plumber this time so had one out today and he left and 10 mins later came back. Wasnt happy he couldnt find the leak.Looked Wayyy under the house in the crawl space and found it up against the house from the outside. Darn blue poly! Busted and settled but was under 500 to fix it YAY :)

Had a brittle shell on one of the eggs under Helen, she stepped on it and half the shell shattered. Didnt think the baby was alive so I pulled it apart and I cried when the baby took a breath and stretched when I took the membrane off. No way it would live. No shell for it to sit in while the huge yolk sac absorbed in. It was about 6 days early. :( So sad. Sorry baby. Next time I will just keep it warm and safe, but how to protect it without the shell when a hen is sittin on it to incubate? Any advice?

Oh HON. I'm so sorry, how terrible to see. :( I had one Mallard die early last year (oops- make that two yrs ago) for some reason, and opening the shell KNOWING it was dead, was still so sad, since it already had it's lil yellow stripes and all. I can't imagine how you felt with it being alive. :(

I have no idea what you could have done, IF you could have covered it somehow you could have maybe finished it off on a heating pad. Believe it or not, a heating pad on low runs right around 98-100*. I finished the last week and a half of a Mallard clutch once when Mama's nest was raided- that was my intro to the world of incubation..

Just for future reference, it can work. But it doesn't sound like it had enough she'll to even work with.

Thanks carcar, but not any shell to make much mention of at all. Was worried that it would get shrink wrapped because it would get dried out. I read of finishing out a tiny bit of a yolk sac in the bottom part of the shell, but it needed to finish growing, there was so much yolk ....

Ugh :( I'm so sorry.

not noisy at all, the hens sound exactly like crickets and the roos a funny little sound. Nothing like a chicken rooster at all!

Harder to incubate than chickens but the chicks aren't any harder to raise. I love my birds. Check out josh in griffin's fa ebook page, quail king and also there is a quail forum here

This is so very helpful to hear; I spent today doing critter chores between checking on baby bunnies and hatching chicks -and thinking about how quickly i can pull together quail housing! I have been reading up on the birds and following Quail King on FB for a while, and am dying to try quail now. I can deal with cricket noises.

I started to reply to individual posts made while I was offline today, but I'll sum it up quick -ish (don't faint):**Sorry if I mix up any replies**

Chickie Momma: glad you got that leak fixed! So sorry about your chick :(.

Buddy Pheonix: How'd the rest of your hatch go? Still at it? I'm waiting on one last straggler, and lost one of the twelve that quit before it zipped all the way.

Ab and Carcar: Yay! Turkey eggs! I'm glad somebody has them, because my girls are pretending they have no idea what eggs are!

my Silkies are in a little hutch up off the ground, with a wire bottom except their nest box. I thought the hen wasn't laying yet, but it turns out she has been, but not in the box and my stupid roo has been stomping the eggs through the wire!!! I caught him at it today -too late to save the egg -and poked around under the coop and found evidence of other egg-icides. WTH?! How on earth do I get her to use the nest box and keep him from killing the eggs -without killing him, I mean. He's only here for one reason after all.

Hey. I had already been chided for taking too long in Walmart. :p it was my daddy's birthday and dinner started at 4.. We passed your fire emergency at 4:10. ;)
