YO GEORGIANS! :)

Has anyone one thought about some of us getting together and pitching in on the cost of a whole cow or calf being processed for the meat? It could fill our freezers for a yr. I cant afford the whole cost or freeze the whole amount. I don't even know anymore if it would be feasible, I have no clue what the costs would be either. guess the caffeine has kicked in

I have a neighbor who raises grass fed beef. I've thought about doing the same thing with our family members that live closest to us. If 4 or 5 of us go in on a calf, it shouldn't be too expensive.

Thanks.
Yes I agree, I really like making old things into new. Wow, 1889 that was a day or two ago. Something that has survived that long deserves a second chance and what a great way to reuse it!

Yup, the coop in my 2nd pen is made from an old outhouse that was sitting in my backyard. The lumber came from an old cotton mill in Shannon, GA - just a few miles from us in Plainville.

CL,,, I will start to look as well. I did ask the butcher at the grocery store about getting pork belly so I could make my own bacon, but he told me I would have to buy the whole 200lb order, because they would get the whole pork belly from a pig and no one has asked before, with $100 dp. and $100 to pick up, would be ok because that would make the bacon $2.00 lb after spices and processing, but what to do with 200lbs of bacon, ya know
Check at an Asian market or Hispanic market in your area. In Savannah we were able to purchase MUCH smaller portions. The first time we bought several trimmed bellies. The second time we cured, we bought 1 large pork belly. I can't remember how much it weighed...maybe 10 lbs? It was about $3/lb, so as far as cost effectiveness, maybe it wasn't the best deal. However, we cured and smoked it ourselves, and gave sliced portions as Christmas gifts. Our family LOVED it!

Yep it's terrible. Ours has taken over several fruit trees before we even realized (it was here when we moved, we didn't know it was like that so didn't keep a close eye). It's probably taken over at least an acre in our side, plus spreading on our neighbor's property as well. :/
Same here. Its really neat stuff, just so invasive.
Nice!! I really like seeing other people doing stuff like this. Anyone else out there got any refab?
I think we started around the same time :D
I used to live in the Tampa Bay area (Florida). But I grew up in the country when I was little and people always had chickens, and they always fascinated me. So when I moved up here a year and a half ago it got me thinkin. Its deffinatly a learning experiance

We were very excited to finish our coop. We were able to keep our costs to a minimum, mainly because the people that lived in our house previously left so many building supplies we could use. They even left leftover paint that matched our house! We had to invest a bit more in our run, as we have raccoons and cats roaming our area, so hopefully the girls will stay safe! Our girls are about 2-3 months from laying, so we blocked off the layer boxes until closer to time. When we had chickens at our old home, the girls would sleep in the nesting boxes, making a huge mess! We are trying out "poop trays" filled with Sweet PDZ. So far it has worked well, but we are only a week in! I got free plant trays from Lowe's to make the trays, so if the experiment with the trays does not work, then it is no loss! My husband even made tools to clean out the trays and roosts!

I do, but I think I lost the album it was in.

I have an old above-ground pool siding that stands about 4 feet tall. It was held up on the inside using 4x4's and a lattice gate attached near one corner. We put the heavy-duty netting over the entire top to keep climbing and flying predators from getting in, and keep the chickens from jumping or flying out. It worked out rather well, until it just turned into one giant muck puddle that never seemed to dry up!
