The "space inside the pen" works great. I made a permanent grow-out pen inside my main run and I love it. Because it's in the main run, the adult chickens and the newbies can see each other and get aquatinted. After a couple of weeks I start letting them mingle a little. Of course there's always going to be the pecking order squabbles but I am really happy about how well this worked especially considering that I have LF Cochins and silkies. My older chickens kinda get an "Oh, they're over here now?" attitude and seem pretty disinterested in the younger ones.
 
Now I just need to shake off this sicky feeling and get my butt moving outside..........better said than done tho

Im not sure when to put mine out there. I have five grown game hens that are still skidish. they were free ranged before coming to me. Im afraid they will kill my babies. I dunno if im being over protective or not....

I have a small dog crate I put new chickens in to introduce them safely. Leave them in the coop for several days. The older girls all gather around the coop at first, but they lose interest. Then, I put the new ones on the roosts late at night so they all wake up together. Seems to help. There will still be the pecking order to sort out, but..... Be sure the new ones are at least 1/3 the size of the bigger girls!

PRAY FOR ME, EVERYONE! I'm about to go to TSC and need to come back WITHOUT chicks! (Unless they have leghorns, because I need a total of 24 that were already paid for, don't have that many, and my leghorn hen died when my nieces/nephews left the pen open again. But those aren't for keeping, so I'm good)

Keep in mind the daytime weather will be warm for the next few days but rainy tomorrow and Saturday. Keep an eye on the weather report, that is what I am doing. Not sure just a nest box would provide enough protection if we get a storm on Saturday and the temps are dropping into the 40's at night.

And that is precisely why I am kicking a bunch of chicks outside today. They wil be in playpens with a heat lamp, and under a carport. But it's time for many of them to go out.

Once they go in out they stay out. I don't move them out of the brooder until they're 8 weeks. By that time their feathers are in and they can regulate their body heat. I bought a child's playhouse from Craig's list and it's in the grow-out pen to provide shelter for the chicks. It's worked great. I didn't even loose any to the polar vortex.

My hubby and son will eat my eggs, just wont pick them up in the coop... patients,,, they will come around.

What's really funny is when the renters ask me questions about fertilized eggs. I tell them chicken eggs are like human eggs, you don't need a male to have them 'pass', but you do need a male to make them fertile. You should see their faces when they realize that a chicken egg is the equivalent of a human egg, but bigger! hahahhaha They had just never thought about it like that!!!
 
My 2 new babies (I almost got killed for getting!)

Speckled Sussex (Freckles) on left and EE (Emma) on right. I have been waiting a long time to find an EE with her coloring. She is growing out white with orange tips. I have admired other EEs like this one but haven't found one until now. Risked DH's anger to get her! (He's not really all that mad....just acts like that to keep me in check! Honestly, I would probably have a 100 chickens if he didn't hold me on a reign! He actually spoils them rotten!) I just love them all!
