My last dorking chick from @abmaddox1981 died on Saturday. Boo! We moved the "big kids" - fully feathered 6 week olds - up the hill to their coop/run and I am down to 10 chicks in the basement brooder.

So the horrid news first: We recently found out we can not have fowl on our property. This lot is zoned C-1 Hwy Commercial. And you have to have a minimum 3acres for livestock or fowl.

AWESOME news: @debgal is allowing us to house the feathered critters on her property until we find another solution. She's awesome for letting us do this

The tentatively awesome news: We currently rent from my grandfather and he has said IF I can find some awesomely cheap property, he will purchase it so we can buy it back from him.
But this is why I've been pretty MIA lately.

I would suggest tax auctions and foreclosures. Lot across the street from me (18 acres) went for $400 an acre. Grant it no house on it but still, folks are desperate and there are deals to be found.

Could also consider renting in a rural area if you aren't picky. Sheesh I rent a small house with 4 acres for $450 a month, the owners are just glad I pay rent every month, they couldn't care less about my dogs and chickens!

Lots of options out there, just be creative.

Always something happening here, lol!

Max woke me up this morning, in my window, growling at another cat who was growling right back - also IN my window. I go outside and walk up to them to pick one or the other up and move them, the unknown cat (grey and white) starts to run away. Max, evil cat that he can be, pounces on the one who has now turned its back on him and a fight ensues for a second or two. Then it's back to stand-off mode.

I step forward again, grey cat moves again, Max pounces on him from behind again. Another fight, this one probably for a good 30 seconds.

Grey cat finally breaks loose and takes off into the woods. At this point SPIRIT chases him off, but Max is close behind her.

Fast forward six hours. Max is sleeping on my bed, but in my way. I go to move him and he acts like his back got popped out of place, and he keeps curling to one side. He won't straighten out at all. So I lay him down and start petting and massaging until I find the problem. But it's no bone issue....yet.

And the state it was in tells me its NOT from this morning's fight. But it may have been caused by that cat because he's been seen a LOT lately.

Turns out Max has some type of punctre would right behind his front right leg. It almost sits in his "arm pit" there, but not quite, just a little bit behind it.

But the problem is, it is severely infected. Just pulling the fur back a bit caused a tiny hole in the scab and let pus come gushing out. Max howled when I did it, too.

But with the help of a towel and both legs to pin him down, I was able to inject antibiotics both directly in the wound, as well as into his shoulder muscle well above the wound. Naturally, he's ****** at me now. But until I can get it to clear up a bit, and get Max out of so much pain, I won't be able to see if anything is stuck in the wound, like a thorn, part of a claw, splinter, tooth, whatever.

All while dealing with a chick that will probably end up blind in his right eye, and another with a shredded scalp.

At this point, I feel like I deserve an honorary veterinarian degree.
 
Did you also squeeze out all the pus you could? I have things like that on my cats from time to time.. They usually (well, always) heal well.. Do you keep betadine around also? I keep stock at my house and just douse stuff with it when needed.
