My update:

3 Bantams that hatched with the easter hatchalong are doing well, still so tiny and getting in feathers!

4 Mystery TSC Ducks are over a Month old and HUGE but no feathers yet? (so messy!)


Our 6 chickens we put in the coop a while ago now get free range time in the afternoons when we have an eye on them. They have started to go about 20 feet from the coop. It scared me a bit as there is no fence in the front yard and an acre from the coop, just grass, goes up to a busy busy road! If they start to wonder I am going to have to figure something else out!

I have picked up nearly every animal in Georgia and animal parts my whole life. I have never caught a disease from any of them. Jenna mentioned the only concern that I would have and that's possible cross contamination of parasites. But I have no concerns about my kids playing with bird feathers, domestic or otherwise. Anthrax occurs naturally in dirt and I certainly don't tell them not to play outside.

Yep. My kids cant get mite or lice from them just my chickens. Which my kids touch... A LOT. So no birdy feathers out of the yard but in the coop are fair game. They love their chicken Feather crafts around moulting time. My 6 year old even makes quills and writes his mamaw letters with them now that he is learning to write complete sentences.

I have the same issue I am using flock raiser right now and will switch to layer when they are old enough. U might talk to tour locale feed store if they don't carry duck food or flock raiser maybe they will order it for u.

They won't. And most local feed stores probably won't, either. They'll have to order it.

But really, you can use chick feed for ducks. Just make sure they also have time to get out and get some fresh grass, or at least some greens from the grocery store like collards, cabbage, etc. And switch them to a low-protein food earlier than you would a chicken (8-12 weeks, instead of 16). You can also mix in wild bird feed and black oil sunflower seeds. For the most part, ducks are foragers, so they'll enjoy digging through a pile of leaves with their bill, and finding bugs and seeds. I have small dips in my back yard where there is grass growing, and I'll often let the water hose fill it up so the ducks can play in that water, and eat the grass that is at/under the water. It's so funny to hear their bills squish on the mud and plants when they find a muddy spot!

Just be prepared for some muddy ducks. But a small pool of clean water will fix that. For a few minutes, anyway.

I posted yesterday that we were expecting chicks from MPC to come in this week. Last night I received an email update on the delivery progress that showed the expected delivery date to our Washington USPS for tomorrow at 3pm. Then this morning I got an email update that said they were in Atlanta at 9:23 so they missed the truck to Washington. I called our post master and he tracked them to arrive in Athens at 12:47. Luckily the Athens post office where they delivered them to was right down the road from where my DH works. He took off early and got them for me.   My order was for 13 and I got 12 so..now waiting for MPC to call me back so I can let them know. I'm thinking I'm an EE short. Now to try and tell what the others are...

Order was for:
1 Partridge Cochin female - Check
1 Blue Cochin female-Check
2 Female Buff Orpingtons- Check
1 Blue Male Silkie- well I got a blue silkie not sure if female or male yet
1 Female Dominique- Not sure what the chick should look like
1 Female Delaware- "
1 Female Buckeye-  "
2 Female Golden Buff- Umm...Got a lot of yellow fluffy butts in there so maybe
2 Female EE- I can tell "one" chick in the bunch is an EE (chipmunk cheeks)

I have one gold colored chick that has a dark streak going down the center of it head and some markings on its back. ??

Dominique chick will be black with a white head spot (barred)
Delaware will be yellow
Buckeye will be red/Orange

EEs can be any color, look for beards, green legs, and pea combs. Although, you can occasionally get a beardless one, or one with a single comb.

Has anyone heard of Glass Pond Farm in Cleveland Ga? Just went to their site they sell ducks and chickens. Mainly juvenile hens and full grown. But all the breeds I want.

I've heard of them, but never dealt with them. I haven't heard anything BAD about them, though.

Oh no, poor little! I wish I knew what to do. I hope a expert can help!

I'm still working with my daughter's little Silkie. She/he is moving around but sleeping a lot. It's drinking some but not really eating. I tried using the search on BYC to find out what was wrong. Now I'm going to look through the Chicks 101 section like Oldmomma said. Sure hope I find what to do soon.
