YO GEORGIANS! :)

Oh yeah, there is plenty of hope. ESPECIALLY with silkies!

But once you start hatching eggs... say goodbye to your bank account and plans to landscape your back yard. For that matter, say goodbye to the trees in your yard, too. You need all that room for more CHICKEN PENS!
I think I'm ahead of the game! I planted a mini orchard recently and am already dreaming about fencing that whole area for a free range type setup for when I get regular sized birds. :)

.... and for those with Ducks, do you have a pond for them? Do you worry about them leaving? We have a 5 acre stocked fishing pond...

I don't have a pond, I just use a little pool for them to splash around in now and then.

And I don't worry about them leaving because pekins can't really fly. The only domesticated duck that can fly well is the mallard. The rest will fly a little bit, but not very far from the ground at all. So they tend to stick around. Since you have a large pond though, yours probably won't leave at all - even if you got a mallard!

We have a 2.5 acre pond and free range our 26 ducks. No problems with them leaving at all. We do get time to time drop ins and even had a family of wild Black Bellied Whistling ducks move in for a while and raise four ducklings. The ducks generally don't get too far from the pond, they like to be able to get in the water quick if they feel threatened.

Hi; prowlunwoof is near you, but I don't think his birds are laying yet. He could probably point you in the right direction though?
If your looking for a grown layer I have a friend who has more than me and he might be willing to part ways. Anderson's is still selling chicks as of last weekend. If I were you I would buy 2-3 chicks and raise them. It's been fun watching my bety's grow up. My girls should be laying in a month or so.

Do you keep all the things you hatch or are you selling them? I just don't know where you guys are putting all these critters! Especially when they are all different ages!

Well, I have four coops (three with runs, one more like a hutch), a mobile turkey pen, and one duck pen on several acres, so I have a pretty decent "holding capacity". However, I do sell/trade some birds and some are dual - purpose egg/meat birds. I'm still exploring different breeds and deciding which I like best.
