I totally agree BUT...
Honey I've had more thermometers than I can count.I've had mercury, digital, spike.. At the moment I have the one that came with the bator right beside the one from WalMart y'all suggested. Both mercury.. Both between 101-102 degrees.![]()

I am with you! It's nearly impossible to tell if you've actually got the right temp. Millions of dials...which do you trust? Even after calibrating, I don't think they read correctly for very long.
Well, the walmart one I use for temp is mercury. It and the other mercury are at top-of-egg level. They have read 101-2 this whole time.Ah, gotcha. So the "high" and "low" temps on the walmart version also say 101-102 degrees? I think it shows those temps from the past 24 hours, so it might tell you if there's a temperature dip at night or something.
Yes, this is how I calibrate. When I out my original bator thermometer in ice water it zooms straight to 32*.. I mean, I don't know any better way to do it and I tend to trust this more since you can't do that with a digital..You have to set it in ice water. If it doesn't read 32 deg, you either adjust it to say so or do the math every time you read it.
Wait...how are you so successful with hatching? Must be a magic touch! I calibrated three thermometers and still determined my temp was too low.
Get them to hurry up ... I have some eggs for you to finish for me.Well, the walmart one I use for temp is mercury. It and the other mercury are at top-of-egg level. They have read 101-2 this whole time.
The walmart *digital* therm I only use for hygrometer. Reason being, it sits on the floor of my incubator. I can't figure out how to rig it at "egg height". If anyone has any ideas on that I'm all ears.
That being said, the ONLY thing temp-related I use that digital for, is to note swings. It hasn't shown any wide swings more than a degree or two.
Honestly I'm not too terribly worried. Hubby and my mom's boyfriend are working on a fridge bator for me and I have *really* high hopes for it seeing as my mom's boyfriend is somewhat of a rocket scientist. I've already got a good start on collecting.. I just hope they'll have it ready by then!![]()
