YO GEORGIANS! :)

4 weeks old is too late to see the darker red coloring on female RIR heads, so go on to the wings. I have found that on MOST chicken breeds (not all), you can tell a boy from the girl by looking at the shape of the wings.

Primary and secondary feathering all same length = girl

Primary wings longer than secondary wings = boy

All you guys out there.....is this what you are taking about? I have found that I can't do this with Black Australorps. All my girls had longer primary wings. But, so far, the other breeds I have dealt with, this works well.

Also, at 4 weeks, you may begin to see the start of wattles under its chin.

I laugh because I have a chicken that at two weeks old looked like this! No waiting to guess on this little stinker! Obvious boy right off!

Oh yeah, that's definitely a boy. Not only the waddles, but look at that BRIGHT RED comb! With that much red already, he's definitely a roo!

I am in desperate need if a female for my 2 yr old Cayuga/ crested Drake "Alfalfa". A stupid raccoon came in and took her from him and all the eggs she was nesting. We have now since dealt with the raccoon and fortified the enclosure. (Much more barbed wire). But now Alfalfa is the third wheel to our other pair. Just want to get this guy a new friend. Possibly 3 total females just to make my 2 boys happy. People have suggested just getting rid of on of my boys but that will NEVER be an option. They are our babies and it's not fair to them just because a stupid raccoon was dumb enough to come in to my duck enclosure.

Finally trapped that stray cat today. Will be taking it to the rescue place. He never did run after the ducks or anything. Just looking for food he recognized thank goodness.

Darn! Looking out window and saw cat walking down driveway. Ran to the cage to see how it got out and the cat was still there! So we have two cats! To top it off, our friend who was going to take it to their rescue place came and said they were feral cats and too old and they won't take them! Now what do we do?

Okay peeps. Keep us in your thoughts, prayers, etc. We put in a bid on an awesome property last week. The listing agent tried to get us to make a larger offer but the owners have done zero upkeep on the fences and out buildings and the current renters of the house would not allow us to look inside. Really? But I soooo want this place. It's absolutely perfect for what I want to do. So just keep us in mind please. :D

So found out about the chickens/chicks we should be getting from a friend in the next 48 hours or so. Not 13 chicks anymore, the little things could get through their run fencing and they are down to just 2 chicks, 5 hens, and a rooster. I was told the white hens are laying. (No idea how many white hens or any breeds LOL)

As the military royally messed up DHs pay things are tight till the first so we came up with a temp coop/run. Not predator proof but we have not had a loss in over a month so not too worried. Set up a nesting box in a bin link this: http://beckyshomestead.com/chicken-nesting-box-plans

They are coming with waterer and feeder thankfully!

Chicken Math is Wild! LOL
