I had several CCL chicks hatch overnight and while I was counting them I noticed that one has scissor beak! Is this a death sentence? I have never had this problem before, so I'm not sure what to do. Is there anything that I can do, or should this one be culled?

Some people say it is a vitamin deficiency, some say it is hereditary. If you want to try to save it, give it some water soluble baby vitamins WITHOUT iron. We had one once and she died about 5 months old. You can google it. Lots of suggestions on the internet. There was one woman on the internet that refused to let her crossbeaked chick die and she keeps it alive by tube feeding it twice a day! The chicken is older now and she still does it! Crazy. Anyway, I just noticed that I have a hen who has just developed a slight crossbeak. I have changed chicken food to the Layer? brand. It is one of the few that has Vit E in it.

Can't send'em back. She closed up farm and left. As far as their behavior getting out of control, I think I will put in a swing just to see what happens.

The thing about this is that the roosts are usually too high for the silkies to get to since Silkies can't fly as well as the other breeds. So, I found I had to put a ladder system in our coop for the Silkie (that we use to have) to hop up to the top to roost with the big girls.

We are working on a coop for all the chicks now. We plan to put a ramp/ladder up to the roost so I hope they will be able to roost with the others.

nice wide roost and a low one put in just with her in mind- even placed her on it too AND there was a heat light. She was a lone hatcher but got put in with duccles when she was big enough to come out of the brooder. She never seemed to have much chicken sense from time of hatch but hey, she didn't have any chicks/chickens around her until the duccles were friendly with her. I think too much inbreeding to keep characteristics had a lot to do with it- the only 1 of 30 to hatch! Silkies from a different source had no problems:-) So many free deals going on! I'm waiting for mine to come along...and quarantine, quarantine, quarantine!

I'm not sure if you know who Kathy Shea Mormino a.k.a., the chicken chick is but I know that she has or had a chicken with a scissor beak. I think she said it was able to drink from the chicken water nipples better than with just a regular water bowl. A friend just gave me a very gently used GQF 1270 Incubator. Anyone here have any experience with them and have any tips or pointers to pass along?
