Welcome to the flock!! Albany is a beautiful town.

For those that give their flock yogurt, is the Chobani Greek Plain yogurt ok to give my chickens? It is the only plain yogurt the local grocery store I went to carries. I wanted to give my older chickens some of the yogurt tomorrow. Also how much do you give them?

I was gone so long, my cat Max hasn't bothered to go outside since I brought him in. He just meows and follows me around, but won't budge out of the door UNLESS I go outside!

So my hen just died

I want to send her for a necropsy to UGA, anyone have that number by chance?? I keep trying to Google it, but I can think straight, I'm so sad. I felt her crop, I didn't feel an object this morning like I thought I did yesterday. Now I just don't know what happened?? She was convulsing before she died, terrible

The Chicken Chick has a link on one of her pages to USDA Veternarians. This is what her page said:
**Any time a chicken dies unexpectedly, a veterinarian, poultry pathology lab, state extension office or the USDA should be consulted for a disease investigation that includes a necropsy of the deceased bird(s). Always preserve the body for a necropsy by keeping it cold, never frozen, until further instruction is given by a vet. The USDA veterinarians can be consulted, free of charge at: 866-536-7593.**

I am very sorry for your loss. Such a hard thing to deal with.

Hey guys! How are your flocks doing in this crazy heat? We do not have our run finished yet so my little guys have had to stay in the coop. Let's just say that we ended up installing a storm window on the coop door (covered with hardware cloth of course) and a huge fan. So basically we have three windows and a fan open until 8:30 pm. Our chicks like to climb on their roost ladder and sit in front of the fan and chill. I have also added 6 or 7 frozen water bottles for them to play with. They love standing on them and dust bathing next to them. Thank goodness we placed our coop in the shade and their run is in the shade too. They are 5 weeks as of tomorrow! I saved one yesterday. The little chick was hot and could barely walk. I took it inside and gave it a faucet bath to cool it off. After its dunk and some water and air conditioning it was ready to roll again! Thank goodness! Hope your guys are all doing well!

thank you. I contacted the ga dpt of agriculture poultry lab nearest me, it's free there. However, they are closed during the weekend and 48 hours is the time limit for necropsy, which would be Monday, I can't drive there then. It's in Forsyth. I just gave her a proper burial. If I lose another I will hope it's not on a weekend. The uga vet clinic charges $100!

You are kidding me?!?!?! $100 for a necropsy? That is crazy. It is almost like taking them to the vet. I am still so sorry for you loss. I am glad that you were able to give her a proper burial. I don't mean this to sound weird but if I ever lose one on the weekend from mysterious reasons then I may just do the necropsy myself. I mean the only thing (not the only thing but it would be a great learning process) that I would not be able to determine would be what type of respiratory illness if there was mucus or puss found in the lungs and blood work for infections. Anyways, now that I have freaked everyone out I will get back to my sunday business! lol

Ugh...so I bought 3 RRI pullets for $45 (a lil high but my rooster needed some hens) and now I just found 2 of them dead. So werid they never grew like my others..I have to find some more. Its so bad because I really loved their behavior. Now I have to keep an eye on the other one...
