YO GEORGIANS! :)

I was just woke up by the sound of chicks in the bator an 230 in the morning. Also the dog heard them and have to see what's going on. 3 have ppopped out in about 15 minutes.
Awesome!! But as you predicted, the girls are missing it. Maybe a couple will lag behind for them.

I figured I'd wake to at LEAST a pip from this Marans egg. Nothing. Still peeping away and pecking at the shell like crazy.

At this point I'm assuming it's malpositioned? This is day 23 going into 24 this evening. I don't want to help but it's killing me that it's very obviously alive. But if I did help and it's malformed and I had to cull it I'd be even more mad at myself.

Suggestions?

Good luck carcar. I've never had luck hatching marans. I've been told by my people to dry hatch til lockdown then add water. Becky helps ours when we hatch but then again we don't cull any.

IMO, I would probably make a few cracks in the shell around where it is pipping and put it back in. I would take a paper towel and wet it with warm water to hold around the egg to keep it moist while I worked with it. Just pry away some of the shell. If there is no blood, I would probably removed most of the shell. If there is blood, just loosen some of the shell around the head and make sure it isn't shrunk wrapped. If it is, pull it away from the face. I did this to those 5 babies the broody abandoned while they were pipping and they did well. Good luck.

I forgot about how much you helped those.. That's right!

I did check again and it's just peck-peck-cheep-cheeping,, I could see where the shell has worn thin so I sanded it down really thin. I actually tried to break through with sharp tweezers but couldn't get all the way through. So I sanded more and put it back. I'll watch it an hour or so and decide further.

My question is: does yolk absorption start on internal pip? Or external?

And thanks guys!! Oh and Buddy.. I had dismal luck last year too but these actually did great! IF this one makes it out I'll have a 50% hatch from shipped eggs! :clap

That's pretty good. Good luck. Becky and I are trying chicks this year lol. Hatch a few. Try to keep chicken math to minimum this year lol

I hear ya. This is a flock-building year for me so hopefully I don't go too overboard. At least I'm limiting myself to three breeds/types lol.

I did it! I made a true, natural-looking pip! Check it out.

And when I did break through it was RIGHT at the tip of her beak. :clap
