how much chick feed do you have? what kind are you using? reason I ask, a lot of the feed companies put a chart on the back that tells when to change to what food, you should probably change and get them the extra nutrients they need. You're not far from starting to get eggs!

Chick Starter 0 - 8 weeks
Grower food 8 - 16 weeks
Layer feed 16 weeks

Some companies offer the Chick Starter/Grower Feed in the same bag but some are separate. Not sure which one you were using, but it is time to change to Layer feed. They need different nutrients to start their bodies to prepare for EGGS!!!

That is good to know! Mine are 9 weeks and I have been wondering the same. Seeing different timing based on different brands. We just ordered an organic Grower/Finisher from Scratch and Peck Feeds. I'm even thinking about starting the new chicks on that brand when they come because I can get the organic feed in a bag that's bigger than 5lbs at a time.

They go through 5lbs pretty quick and I feel like I should just move in at the TSC where we live.

I expect to be done this week, provided that the weather cooperates. Siding is done, trim is done, roof rafter brackets are in place. Doors need to be cut & installed and I began cutting the inside walls today. They'll go up quick. then I can put in the roosts & paint everything. We used recycled pallet wood where we could(mostly just the trim). The window trim is just waiting for a flower box to be added. That was a last minute extra decision, but we have about 16 pallets so plenty of free wood for that! Why not, right?

Good to know. I appreciate the feedback. I took a walk around our deck and house and inspected it to get ideas on where to go with it. I remember the listing described it as "rustic" when we looked at the property, which was code for "the dude built it himself".

I wanted it to look rustic so I just did what he did. I was planning originally to miter the trim work so it would be seamless, but then I just said eff it. It's a house for chickens. LOL SO far I'm thinking it's not so bad for a first timer. We'll see what happens when we get the first wind gust blowing through. My biggest worry right now is that there isn't as much shade in that spot as I thought. I just hope I didn't build a giant oven. There's lots of ventilation, we used foam insulation boards left over from a previous project, and I raised it specifically so they'd have a shaded part of the run. *fingers crossed*

Right now we have 1 RIR named Abigail, 1 Americauna named Suessy, a Silver Laced Polish Pair named Zax and Marie Antoinette and a breeding trio of Crested Cream Legbars named Gump, Ginny, and Lovie Dovie. And I have more eggs coming in the mail! Lol! Chicken math is going to get the best of me I swear!
 
Sad day for Mama Silkie. We took her 5 babies and put them with the other chicks. She was not letting us anywhere near the babies. Could barely put water and food in the coop without her puffing up and screaming at us. I let her mom raise her and that is why she is so 'wild'. I don't want these chicks to grow up like that. My hand/brooder raised hens are sweet and let you hold the babies as soon as they are hatched. But, it is sad. The mom is looking for them and the chicks are chirping for her.

That's the biggest downfall to letting broodies hatch eggs.
